Product identifi cation and the importance of the BESA QR code


Testing alone is no longer enough. Product identifi cation and traceability are becoming just as important as performance verifi cation. Manufacturers should ensure all newly tested HIUs carry the correct BESA product identifi cation label and QR code linked directly to the relevant current test report. This may appear to be a simple administrative detail, but it will become a compliance requirement. HNTAS assessors and inspectors are expected to verify installed products against approved


performance data. They will need to establish a clear connection between the HIU installed on site and the certifi ed product performance data held on record. The BESA QR code system provides this traceability. It enables fast verifi cation and gives assessors confi dence that installed products match approved test results. Failure to correctly identify a product tested under


the current regime could jeopardise recognition of the associated test results. In some circumstances, results may be removed from the register if identifi cation requirements are not met. For manufacturers, this means product labelling must be treated as a core part of compliance strategy, rather than an afterthought. What contractors and building owners should be doing now Contractors, developers and building owners also


have an important role to play in preparing for the regulatory changes ahead. They should engage with suppliers early to ensure HIUs specifi ed for new installations and also for replacement projects are tested to the latest BESA standard and supported by current certifi cation and product identifi cation. Procurement strategies should also be reviewed, and the following questions should be asked: ¡ Is the HIU tested to BESA Version 3.0 or 3.1? ¡ Is the certifi cation current? ¡ Does the product carry the correct BESA QR label?


Trade Matters with


¡ Can installed units be traced to independently verifi ed performance data? These are no longer optional considerations, but


are becoming essential questions to ensure products are compliant with the regulations. Building owners and operators should also begin reviewing existing assets to understand where legacy equipment may present future risks to compliance.


The industry must prepare now


Heat networks are moving into a regulated environment where independently verifi ed performance, traceability and compliance evidence will become standard expectations. Therefore, the message to industry is straightforward: act now. Manufacturers should ensure products are tested


to BESA HIU Test Standard Version 3.0 or 3.1 and clearly identifi ed with the correct BESA QR label. Contractors and specifi ers should ensure they


only select appropriately certifi ed products. Heat network operators and building owners should review assets and procurement strategies now to prepare for HNTAS Milestone 1 and the wider regulatory framework. Those who prepare early will not only reduce


compliance risk but also help deliver better- performing heat networks for consumers. And that will benefi t the entire sector.
