From the editor Pandemic
disruption T
he serious impact of the coronavirus on society, and by extention our industry, was not unexpected, but just how quickly this has accelerated and how potentially damaging may have caught some of us by surprise.
Most of the news stories I have received in the last couple of weeks have been related to the virus outbreak in some way – some giving advice to heating engineers, some revealing how construction firms are weathering the storm (or not) and some announcing postponements of events which are valued, enjoyed and extremely beneficial to our sector under normal circumstances. Some companies have also highlighted HVAC
solutions, such as humidification, which can potentially deactivate viruses by keeping an RH of between 40 and 60 per cent, or air filtration solutions to safeguard our commercial buildings from circulating germs. This crisis is front and centre on the minds of all involved in HVAC which is why it is also featured significantly in this issue. Pg 8 is devoted to the latest news on how the industry has reacted, while pg 9 focuses on deep cleaning of ventilation systems in a bid to limit the potential spread of airborne viruses. On pg 14 & 15 BESA focuses on what can be done to safeguard and maintain commercial buildings which are now facing a very lenthy shutdown.
The government has announced unprecedented measures to protect workers jobs and is confident that, if we all play our part, we will get through this.
It may take some months yet, but we look forward to things getting back to normal, when businesses reopen and rescheduled events can take place safely without friends or colleagues posing a danger to one another.

COMFORT SOLUTIONS FOR 790 ROOMS n innovative air conditioning system has been chosen to provide comfort to guests at the
Strand Palace Hotel in the heart of London.
The hotel, which is in walking distance from some of London’s most famous theatres and has been welcoming guests since 1909, needed to modernise its heating and cooling systems to ensure a quality experience for guests. High levels of energy efficiency and minimal disruption to the hotel’s operation during installation were also key considerations.
The solution came in the form of theHybrid Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systemfromMitsubishi Electric, which offers simultaneous heating and cooling with full heat recovery. The combination of refrigerant and water used in Hybrid VRF also delivers a much lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than traditional VRF systems and saves around 30-40% in refrigerant use in comparison. The fit-out was designed by Elementa Consulting and installed by Working Environments and has seen units fitted across the hotel’s 790 rooms. The project started in September 2018 and is due for completion this month, making the project ‘the biggest of its kind in Europe’. With an occupancy of 96% every day of the year, it was crucial that the hotel remained fully operational during installation to minimise loss of revenue and disruption to guests. wTed Connell, specifier and designer at Elementa, said: “Many different systems were assessed, but the expertise of the Working Environment team combined with the modular installation of the Hybrid VRF made it stand out as the right option for The Strand. It was possible to complete the installation floor by floor, even half a floor at a time where necessary, allowing the hotel to remain open during the process.” The Hybrid VRF system also offers
additional cost-saving benefits by removing the need for leak detection equipment. Refrigerant is only used between the outdoor condenser and a special Hybrid Branch Controller (HBC) box. From here, water is used to transfer heating or cooling to each room, removing the need for additional equipment or additional annual maintenance regimes.
