Heat pumps (air and water source) are going to be without doubt the future of space and water heating in the UK as the world moves to decarbonise. Heat pumps are nothing new and DX, VRV and VRF systems have been pulling heat from thin air for decades now, however they are best suited to smaller scale applications and until recent years the larger scale air source heat pump with capacities above 250kW


W were a rare item of plant.


The challenge for air source heat pumps (ASHP) has always been producing the higher water temperatures required for them to replace gas boiler plant, especially in lower ambient temperatures particularly below freezing.


CO2 refrigerant systems do offer a solution that can deliver very high- water temperatures of 90°C+, but they typically need a return water temperature back to the unit of below 40°C which leads to a (difficult to apply) wide ∆T°K across the heating circuit, or the need to add supplementary heat rejection to bring the return water temperature below this limit which in turn erodes system efficiencies.


With the global push to move away from refrigerants with a high GWP R410a has stopped being the mainstay of heat pump technology and many alternatives have been developed.


HFO R1234ZE has been Cooltherm’s ultra-green alternative to R134a for the last few years when suppling industrial water chillers, however it would also transpire that R1234ZE’s wide enthalpy envelop lends itself well to the application of ASHP’s.


There are many advantages of opting to install a R1234ZE heat pump over alternatives such as CO2 if an operating leaving temperature of 75°C


or less is required; these benefits include significantly lower operating pressures, non-specialist fabrication of the plants internal components and maintenance thereof, and the capital cost of the ASHP is much lower than CO2.

At this condition these units deliver an EER of 2:1 and in typical UK winter ambient conditions this rises to over 3.5:1. The Cooltherm team has just completed the handover of two inverter driven reciprocating compressor ASHP’s which have been combined with matched high efficiency Air Handling Units for a UK Nuclear research establishment, these units also have an exceptionally low noise level of 50.8 dB(A). Moving forward R1234ZE is a real alternative to boilers providing hot water within the UK’s building stock.
