Five 19th century derelict stone barns on a Cotswold Farm were converted into luxury holiday lets eco-friendly and efficient ground source heat pump technology from Kensa.
Heather Ramsden A
The heat pumps were linked to an innovative shared ground loop array system which enables each property to have independent low carbon, low cost heating, and provides the owners with a generous 20-year income from the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Old stone buildings can be very cold so great care was taken in balancing the requirement to preserve and show off the character of the buildings, with the desire to keep the occupants warm and cosy.

The buildings heat demand was lowered by paying particular attention to airtightness and insulation, as

well as installing MVHR, making it possible to heat via underfloor heating which suited the interior design in a luxury project like this.

The planners were looking f for a low-carbon system, y, reducing the heat load opened the door
to low-carbon heating. Having looked into various approaches, opting for ground source heat pumps worked out as the best solution.
Each Kensa ground source heat pump upgrades heat energy from the ground to provide every holiday let with independently controllable heat and hot water

Country of origin: UK Founded in: 1999
Number of employees in the UK: 89
• We were the first to create a ground source heat pump small and quiet enough to be installed into flats and apartments in the Kensa Shoebox range.
Pioneering the development and adoption of ground source heat pumps:
• We were first to develop the largest single phase ground source heat pump available, perfect for large UK properties, the 24kW Twin.
Kensa now has the largest number of ENA ‘Connect & Notify’ approved ground source heat pump products in the UK enabling simpler, quicker and lower cost ground source heat pump installations.

The available open space around the property was reserved f for potential further development so the for a spa
of 13 boreholes were drilled neatly under the path outside each property.
Linking individual ground source heat pumps to a communal ground array, acting as a shared energy source, removed the need for a central plant room. The owner commented that the comffor
ort levels
achieved in the barns are better than he had dared to hope:“I’m amazed by how warm they
are.The barns are far more comffor
ortable than my house. Maybe one day I’ll be able to move into one.”
