Mondelēz employees raise £5,000 for Sense charity
TOMRA addresses reverse
vending options Deposit return schemes were high on the agenda at the annual Scottish Grocers’ Federation (SGF) conference as TOMRA Collection Solutions, a specialist in reverse vending, took to the stage to discuss the opportunities of implementing the recycling system within Scotland. Taking place on October 25-26, the event marked the SGF’s centenary conference which has celebrated and supported the work of local businesses over the last 100 years. In the current climate, concern over the global plastic pollution problem is high and SGF members were keen to learn more about how a DRS can help reduce the levels of plastic going into our oceans and environment, as well as the practical and financial implications for retailers. SGF’s head of public affairs, Dr John Lee, commented: “The
Scottish government has stated that a DRS should be developed in a way that addresses the specific needs of small retailers. “To deliver on this the government needs to guarantee that small
Employees Mondelēz International’s Bournville site have chosen Sense, the national disability charity, to receive a grant of £5,000 from The Cadbury Foundation, as part of its ‘Your Charity, Your Choice’ scheme. The charity’s pioneering, multi-purpose TouchBase Pears centre,
which provides specialist services for people with complex disabilities in Birmingham, will benefit from the grant. Mondelēz International has been supporting Sense throughout
the summer. In May, staff volunteered at a disabled-led arts festival at TouchBase Pears. Employees have also raised over £200 through fundraising activities at the Sense shops in Kingstanding and Shirley. Carl Williams, community fundraising manager at Sense,
said: "We are delighted to have been chosen as a charity to benefit from the generosity of Mondelēz International. TouchBase Pears is a place that brings people together in a welcoming environment. The grant will enable Sense to continue to provide opportunities to the people we support in Birmingham.” Kelly Farrell, community affairs manager at Mondelēz
International, said: “We are extremely proud to be able to support the charities that are important to our employees through our ‘Your Charity, Your Choice’ scheme. Sense supports people with complex disabilities to be understood, connected with and valued. It is the perfect choice for this donation, and we’re delighted The Cadbury Foundation will be making such a difference.”
retailers are not left at a competitive disadvantage with the big supermarkets. We need this policy to succeed and small retailers must be given the resources to participate in it.” Head of TOMRA Collection Solutions, Harald Henriksen,
presented to the assembled Scottish grocers about how the company creates reverse vending machines (RVMs) to enable retailers to automate collection of used beverage containers within a Scottish DRS. Harald spoke about the potential for there to be upwards of
20,000 RVMs throughout the UK, if the DRS’ implementation was widespread. However, he also stated a successful system needs to have a deposit value that motivates consumers to return their beverage containers. He compared the deposit schemes in Germany and Massachusetts, USA, and how the deposit rate impacts return rates. In Germany, the deposit value stands at €0.25 (roughly 20p) and there is a return rate of 98 per cent, in contrast, the deposit value in Massachusetts is $0.05 (less than 1p) and the return rate is only 66 per cent. The higher the deposit value, the more likely consumers are to return their beverage containers. Harald said: “The opportunity is the same for small and large
retailers, what’s vital in a DRS is that anywhere that sells bottles and cans must take them back. For small convenience stores with low throughput this can be done manually, and larger convenience stores can be enabled with automation, so they can participate.”
New Leeds venue for Vendex North
Vendex North is relocating to The Centenary Pavilion, Leeds United Football Club in 2019, having outgrown its previous location. The multi-million-pound Centenary Pavilion is one of the biggest conference and events centres in the North of England and is expected to accommodate the largest number of stands at Vendex to date. The event will be held on October 30, 2019. Directors of events company Trade Events Jenny and Phil Reynolds said: “We are excited to announce the relocation of Vendex North from Manchester to Leeds. Exhibitors have been disappointed not to be able to secure stands for the show in recent years as space has sold out quickly so a move to a larger venue seemed a logical step, although two thirds of stand space at the new venue has already been sold!”
