Feature:Home Security Independent Retail Opportunity

For years, security in-store is top of the list as a priority for all retailers with increased measures in place year on year.

N

o doubt readers themselves have also installed security cameras or doorbell

cameras in their homes. But what about your customers who are not very good at DIY and probably the most vulnerable in our society. Not everyone knows what product is best suited, nor able to install. According to a recent survey from research company Savanta, nearly one in five UK residents have installed wireless video doorbells in the last couple of years, while more than 17 percent of us have fitted domestic video cameras at our homes. But with so many makes, models and features

to choose from, how do consumers pick the best home security cameras? Okay, doorbell cameras, whilst a good

selection in the marketplace are relatively simple to install, but what about security cameras. No doubt, having their locally trusted independent retailer to enter their home and install a security system is a service many consumers would relish. We can then advise consumers what to look for. When it comes to any security system, a high

resolution of 1080p Full HD is the most common camera resolutions. However, to capture more detail of faces or number plates, then 2K, 3K or 4K cameras [offering two, three or four times the resolution of Full HD] are worthy of consideration. Memory storage is often a second thought though just as important as resolution. Some cameras have in-built memory, but these not always the best choice. Owing to risks of camera theft or unforeseen property damage, cloud storage is generally safer than using microSD. That said, with some systems, like Ring, cloud storage comes with a monthly fee.

There is an abundance of security systems

available, albeit for now, many are via online only. Just for info, with a variety of meetings

and correspondence with some of the manufacturers over the past few months, IER has been in discussion with them highlighting missed sales opportunities which would be generated through the independent retailer network, should they choose a mutually profitable business plan. One company has recently informed us as they are now seriously reviewing its retail options. IER will report back as and when.

The choice of wired or wireless security cameras is personal. Whether having a lower budget or wishing

for more flexibility and easier to install, then a wireless camera is the better option Wishing for high quality image capture

and recording on a hard disk drive unit and monitor screen, then a hardwired system is recommended. This is the difference between CCTV and

Regarding what brands are the best, this is not in our remit. We can, however, mention what appears to be the current, most popular. Eufy, Blink, Google Nest, Swann, Reolink, LILIN, Luma and Lorex

Appears most of the models offer ‘live view’ and some having two-way talk facilities. As mentioned previously there is also the

matter of with and without a paid storage subscription. External cameras offering solar panel options appear to be the most effective, keeping batteries fully charged, if the panel has line of sight to some sunshine. Though paying a little extra, it saves the hassle of climbing the ladder to recharge the battery then climb up again once the battery is charged.

wireless home security cameras as wired CCTV cameras work as a direct camera-to-monitor system. This is where the expertise of the installer comes into play, although the system can be DIY, there are many who would be deterred at the sight of trailing extension cables and connectors. The convenience of wireless cameras, transmitting images to the phone, tablet or computer is more appealing to many should they be mobile user confident and having a good, reliable internet connection. Regarding availability of security products for independent retailers to stock and sell, currently, this is limited though we are aware the LILIN brand is distributed by OneAV and the range of cameras and systems is vast. There is also the York based SnapOne, distributing the Luma brand.
