ODU Connectors back at DSEI in 2019 T

he UK defence market faces new challenges from changing technology and DSEI allows us to demonstrate matching developments in our connectors. ODU's first major UK opportunity came in 2002 with Bowman and we have supplied over 100,000 helmet


connectors without a single reported in- service failure. More recent UK design-in's have included Thales Squadnet Radio, Racal Acoustics Magna RA4000 Headset and Selex Elsag Future Soldier Radio. Our Advanced Military Connector Series, the ODU-AMC®


, was subsequently


designed to support the various global Future Soldier programmes.


What did you learn from all that? That the biggest concern of the foot-soldier was 'can I clean it?' which gave rise to our next development - the ODU-AMC®


Easy-Clean.


Whether mud, dust or slush – the contacts are easily and quickly cleaned when unmated, as the contacts lie flush with the insert face.


So, what followed? Soldier modernisation was the beginning, but the ODU-AMC®


High Speed Data


series can combine and transmit all high- speed data transmission protocols, with transfer rates up to 14.4 Gbits/s, so that ODU can reliably connect all interfaces, such as weapons, comms systems and vehicle connections.


Historically, military data connectors incorporated commercial inserts inside a MIL- STD shell. However, we chose the more elegant solution of adapting our own multi-pin connectors to transmit the required protocol – in a much smaller connector with all the ruggedness and perfomance of a military connector. But there‘s a double bonus, not only are ODU-AMC® connectors inherantly smaller, but push-pull locking allows much higher panel density, as finger-space for rotation- locking is eliminated.

in four sizes, with shell diameters from under 10mm up to 18.5mm with 40 contacts, plus power options to 15A and combined data/power to 5A Secondly, responding to a military equipment OEM’s problem with extremely high vibration levels, we introduced the ODU-AMC®


Threaded


Connector which utilises a screw-locking- with-rachet mechanism [half-turn locking] for where pressure/vibration/temperature could be problematic.

Where next for ODU in the UK military market?


Given our success in the niche head-set sector, our extended product range should be of interest to all in-vehicle equipment OEM’s, as the demand for better data performance from yet smaller and lighter equipment gives our rugged miniature connectors an edge.
