What the retailers had to say about Autumn/Winter 2016/17 and the trade shows:

“A very poor AW16 season, I feel due mainly to not getting a winter season until late, Brexit and poor economy. We are also finding it very tough in Coventry due to it turning into a City of students.” Chris Hart, Charles Ager

, Coventry.

“For someone that sells children’s shoes and has children, Moda, being in summer holidays, and Back to School is madness for me. I have never made Moda in August, September is much better.”Michelle Lane, MSSF

, Soles With Heart, West Malling, Kent.

“We thought MODA was quiet this year - we went on the Monday. We rarely attend in August as it's either too busy prepping for Back to School, or we have started our selling and we can't get away.” Kim Jackson, Klodhoppers, Hove and Haywards Heath, West Sussex.

“A major issue for us is the start of winter SALE time. Surely the obvious start date for the traditional sale should be February and completed by end of the month/early March. Often our poorest weather doesn’t start until well after Christmas, just at a time when we are clearing out seasonal stock, i.e. boots etc. Most of our seasonal stock is sold at reduced prices which doesn’t make commercial sense. It’s unfortunate that we appear to be governed by the big high street multiples policy to start A/W Sales early December. Is it not time that we looked at the European SALE time policy, i.e. Germany? Two-three weeks twice year, but not before February?” Roger Hare, Middletons, Norwich.

“AW 16 was again very challenging, our traditional Back to School business is almost gone, schools in our area don’t have a footwear policy, and track suits and trainers are the norm. Not a great season for ladies boots. Weather not helping, the independent sector over here being hit hard, so it is even tougher than it used to be. Some suppliers of children's shoes say that August is too late, I think the Moda Show is TOO early in August, perhaps September could be a better time. Question is whom does the Show serve? Factories, suppliers or retailers?” Bernard O’Brien, Luke O’Brien Shoes, Tuam, Eire.
