Harting’s MICA industrial computer system has been certified as meeting the requirements of Microsoft’s ‘Azure Certified for IoT’ programme. Microsoft’s certification process places certain demands on devices which work with Microsoft Azure services. As a result, MICA has gone through a series of tests provided by Microsoft in order to evaluate the functionality of the hardware.

orthampton-based high-tech manufacturing company, igus, has formally opened its newly-

expanded premises. The engineering support facility has almost doubled in size from 672sqm to 1,000sqm, with the creation of a new upper floor that will accommodate a growing sales and technical support team, while freeing up ground-floor space for the engineering team to meet demand for fully assembled products. The company, which employs 110 people, specialises

in the production of plastic components including bearings and chains. A six-figure sum has been invested in the expansion, which will not only create more space for current engineering but will also allow the company to add significantly to its workforce in the future.

Northampton Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tony Ansell and igus UK MD, Matthew Aldridge officially open the factory’s new floor

celebrated its 25th anniversary in the UK. Matthew Aldridge, managing director, said: “By listening closely to the needs of our customers throughout the UK, we have continuously developed the range of products and services we offer and this has led to successive years of double-digit growth in our turnover. As UK industries embrace ever more efficient manufacturing methods, we have seen particularly strong demand for ready-assembled packages that can be quickly and cost-effectively deployed on site. As a result, we reached the limit of our available space and rather than moving to new premises we opted to expand, which gives everybody more space in which to work. If business levels continue to grow at their current rate we will need to recruit more employees, which this new open workspace enables us to do.” Unlike many manufacturing environments, igus operates in an open-plan workspace, designed to encourage employee engagement and collaboration. The company also runs a number of initiatives to support young engineers, including an apprenticeship programme and provision of products to students and researchers working on projects ranging from hyperloop and robotics to motor racing and medicine.

INDUSTRIAL DIGITALISATION REVIEW DETAILS PLANS TO BOOST INDUSTRY I

ndustry proposals to boost the UK’s

manufacturing sector have been unveiled with the publication of the Industrial Digitalisation Review. Chaired by Siemens UK CEO, Professor Juergen Maier, it outlines proposals to boost the economy using advanced digital technologies including robotics, 3D printing, augmented and virtual reality as well as artificial intelligence. The Government’s Industrial

Strategy Green Paper, launched in January identified industrial digitalisation as one of five potential early sector deals and the Review kick started work with stakeholders to identify opportunities for how government and industry can work together. The Review brings together input and recommendations from over 200 stakeholders, including companies such as Rolls Royce, GKN, IBM,

ndustrie 4.0 has reached the next stage of the digital transformation of industry. Now we will see, for example, how automation technology,

intralogistics and artificial intelligence work together. But who develops such technologies further? And who drives the next wave of decisive innovations? It is the researchers, scientists and developers that visitors will be able to meet at the Research & Technology area of Hannover Messe 2018. Research & Technology in Hall 2 is the international showcase for research,

development and technology transfer. Applied research for sectors such as automation, energy, logistics, and mobility takes centre stage together with cross-industry research like adaptronics, bionics and materials. Hot topics for 2018 include digitalisation, adaptronics, bionics, bio-

economics, and organic electronics. Adaptronics is an adaptive structure technology that combines conventional structures with materials systems to enhance classical load-bearing and form-defining functions with sensory and actuator functionality. In 2017, roughly 400 exhibiting companies presented more than 1,500 new products, concepts and projects to 55,000 visitors, 31 per cent of whom came from outside of Germany. The majority of visitors represented the manufacturing industry, while others came from the energy and trade sectors as well as government organisations.

and Accenture. The Review took substantive input from SME’s such as Yamazaki Mazak and Vertizan as well as academic institutions including the University of Newcastle and the University of Cambridge. R&D centres of excellence, the Digital Catapult and High Value Manufacturing Catapult also co-designed the proposals. Professor Maier said: “The business and academic community has

set out a vision for much greater ambition needed for Britain to be a world leader in the fourth industrial revolution. “Industry is committed

to working in partnership with Government, and this combined package of measures will boost UK growth and productivity in manufacturing and provide more exports, as well as increased earning potential, which our economy desperately needs.”

PACEPACKER REPEATS DOUBLE PPMA AUTOMATION INNOVATION AWARD WIN

A

t the prestigious PPMA Group Industry Awards 2017,

automation specialist, Pacepacker Services, repeated its 2015 success, winning two processing and packaging innovation awards in one night.
