LOW STANDBY CURRENT BACKUP BATTERY


A dual input monolithic power prioritiser for 1.8V to 18V systems has been introduced by Linear Technology Corporation. The LTC4420 powers the load from the higher priority main supply such as a wall adapter or battery, switching to the backup supply - typically a battery or large-value capacitor - during primary brownout or power loss conditions. With up to 18V operating capability, this device accommodates a wide range of power sources such as wall adapters, USB ports, supercapacitors, and stacked batteries with Li-Ion, alkaline or NiMH cells. By reducing device operating current to 3.6µA and the backup supply’s standby current drain to a low 0.32μA, the LTC4420 extends run time in portable battery-operated systems. Unlike other solutions, this device does not require the backup supply


voltage to be lower than the main supply voltage. When the backup supply voltage is higher than the main supply voltage, a prioritiser is a better solution than a simple diode-OR as the prioritiser does not necessarily draw current from the highest voltage supply. Internal 500mA (min) current- limited switches multiplex from the primary to the backup supply when the primary voltage falls below the adjustable switchover threshold. Carefully designed break-before-make fast switch control blocks reverse


and cross conduction currents while minimising output voltage droop. To reduce quiescent current, the backup supply’s resistive divider is connected to a strobed ground with a duty cycle that is adjustable down to a low 0.0015%, and an optional undervoltage disconnect prevents deeply discharged batteries. A freshness seal mode further lowers standby current to 0.12µA, minimising battery discharge during product storage and shipment. Reversed-battery voltages up to −15V are blocked from propagating to the load. www.linear.com

STATE-OF–THE-ART


ELECTRONICS LABORATORY Tektronix in partnership with TTi Distribution, and University of Warwick, School of Engineering, is to open a new fully equipped state-of–the-art undergraduate electronics teaching laboratory with wireless communications. Fully equipped with the latest Tektronix bench test solutions and TekSmarkLab, the laboratory will enable users to focus on gaining critical hands-on skills. The new 100-seat laboratory allows first and second year


students to perform practical electronics experiments on 50 benches. Each of the 50 benches are equipped with Tektronix and Keithley products including: a digital storage oscilloscope, arbitrary function generator, triple output power supply and digital multimeters. In addition, the benches have a PC with two large 24- inch monitors, along with soldering and fume extraction capabilities. Each bench is connected to a TekSmartLab server via Wi-Fi to provide total connectivity and accessibility. Instead of using USB thumb drives to connect to oscilloscopes,


students can now retrieve test results wirelessly by scanning a work station specific QR code with their smartphones. TekSmartLab allows students to remotely access and control instruments, download courseware, obtain results and produce reports using smartphones, tablets or PCs. This platform also enables managers to proactively manage classes


before, during and after lab sessions - from batch instrument configuration, remote autoset disable, centralised status monitoring and wireless retrieval of test results, to managing inventory with serial number identification and measuring utilisation per student. “This is Europe’s largest education laboratory bench
