UK-MANUFACTURED HIGH PERFORMANCE SILENT CHAINS
Around six years ago, the directors of Pennine Industrial, who are looking forward to celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the company in 2018, sat down to decide its future path
F
or over 35 years Pennine Industrial has been involved in the manufacture
and assembly of special inverted tooth conveyor chains. The company decided, not only to develop a new line of two-pin conveyor chains, but also to develop and manufacture a range of silent inverted tooth power transmission chains. The staff started by taking a good look
at all the past patents for silent chains and investigating where they felt they could improve on the current chains on the market. It was important to understand which type and sizes of chains would be required in a rapidly changing power transmission market. Pennine realised that it needed new designs, new tooling and machinery, and a larger premises to cope with the increased production. The company firmly believed that this was a program of between five and eight years, with a cost of over £1 million pounds.
8 OCTOBER 2017 | DESIGN SOLUTIONS A decision was made to go ahead and
the funds were allocated. Pennine’s engineers, with assistance from Sheffiel d Hallam University, started on the engineering design of a two-pin conveyor chain and four different power transmission chains. Planning permission was granted to build a two storey extension costing over £350,000 which was completed two years ago. The result is that the company has brought to market the four power transmission chains, and the two-pin conveyor chain is now being run and tested in a number of plants throughout Europe. Pennine exports 95 per cent of its conveyor chain and sprockets outside the UK and more than half of its exports go to countries outside Europe. All of the new power transmission chains will be promoted globally and the company plans to continue expanding its range of conveyor and power transmission chains
over the coming years. The new range of power transmission and conveyor chains complement Pennine Industrial’s other products, including extruded UHMWPE wear strips and guide rails, a range of conveyor components and an in-house machining facility, allowing the manufacture of plastic components machined to an individual customer’s drawings. Pennine Industrial is one of the leading suppliers of plastics to the food and packaging industry, holding possibly the largest range of UHMWPE extrusions in the UK with over 100 standard profiles. Most of the extrusions are 1,000 grade
ultra high molecular weight polyethylene and suitable for direct contact with food and medical products. There are also special high performance extrusions with additional oils and lubricants to reduce friction on higher speed conveyors. Others extrusions can be supplied on request with additives to give them anti-static properties and the ability to operate in high temperature applications.
