Danny Packham, European Product Manager – Warm Air and Radiant for Nortek Global HVAC UK Ltd, talks about the dierent types of heang systems that are suitable for car showrooms.

T

he evolution of retail has created an expectation of comfort from shoppers especially in the automotive arena. Not only does the customer expect a comfortable environment but more and more car dealerships are realising the importance of a pleasing environment to the overall customer experience – as well as delivering on purchase satisfaction and providing a seamless customer journey.

What to consider when heang a car showroom

Car showroom heating is a necessity and therefore it’s very important that it is done right. Showrooms are usually large open spaces that can be difficult to heat given the high ceilings and vast amount of glazing, which leads to increased heat loss during the winter and heat gains in summer. A cold and uncomfortable car showroom may deter customers from spending too much time within the space, which ultimately reduces the chance of them purchasing a car. Therefore the client needs to determine exactly what kind of system he/she wishes to use i.e. a heating only

system, a heating and ventilation system or a full heating, cooling and ventilation system. Each system has its own benefits and constraints, one of which is budget.

Showroom opons: RTU, AirMix, PREEVA and air curtains

Preeva is a range of gas fired air heaters that can also provide combined heating and ventilation with the option of cooling. Air volumes are model dependent but range from 0.47m3/s up to 3.88m3/s with external static pressures of up to 400pa available.

In addition to the above, models are available with thermal efficiencies above 91% (ncv), or by using models SHH or RHH which have thermal efficiencies above 101% (ncv) making them eligible for Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECA). Preeva is ideal when showrooms have a requirement for both heating and ventilation, as both can be met from a single installation – reducing the time and cost associated with installing two separate systems.

RTU is a range of packaged rooftop units (can also be used on the floor outside) that are fitted with heat pumps providing a range of cooling and heating outputs. Additional heat is available by selecting the option gas fired heater section. When either Preeva or RTU is used in conjunction with Airmix, air distribution will be uniform throughout the space, creating a comfortable environment. AirMix is a high induction air distribution system. It provides an evenly diffused distribution of warm or cooled air and is ideal for showrooms that require heat, ventilation or cooling without large movement of air normally associated with conventional duct systems.

Reznor’s range of air curtains is designed to stylishly complement the style of any showroom and they can be suspended on drop rods in front of glass fronted entrances or wall mounted.

Workshop opons

Reznor’s Vision range of radiant tube heaters is ideal for workshops with an ‘open door policy’ as radiant heaters focus heat on specific areas and do not heat the air, therefore avoiding heat being wasted as it leaves the building. This can result in fuel savings of up to 75%, compared with conventional heating systems in a similar application.

Warm air

Reznor offers a comprehensive range of gas fired suspended warm air unit heaters from the standard UDSA (11kW up to 97kW) which will suit almost every workshop adopting a ‘closed door’ policy. Warm air heating ensures that the whole space is heated and employees feel the benefit, even if working under a vehicle lift. ULSA models offer up to 109% (ncv) thermal efficiency with ultra low NOx levels (class 5 on most models). These units are eligible for Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECA).
