PREVIEW SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING 2018

outhern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to Farnborough on 6-8 February 2018 for its 20th anniversary event. While the show’s trademark blend of factory hardware, component vendors and engineering service providers in a single event remains a familiar theme, its surroundings will be strikingly new. After two decades under canvas in its purpose- built temporary venue, from 2018 the show will move into its new permanent home, the £30m Hall 1 development at Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre. Southern Manufacturing 2018 remains true to its tried-and-tested formula that has seen it grow to become the largest and longest-running annual engineering show in the UK. As usual, the show will host an impressive array of firms from, not just the south, but the whole of the UK, continental Europe and beyond. With the show almost completely sold out, organisers are anticipating around 800 firms will take part in this year’s event, ranging in size from major international machinery manufacturers to small independent specialist engineering workshops. The scope as well as the size of the event, which is divided between mechanical and electronics engineering, covers almost every aspect of engineering design, production and management.

EXHIBITORS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD Components and OEM parts are a key attraction for many visitors. One of the key benefits of Southern Manufacturing is that it has sufficient gravitas to attract vendors from all over the world, offering visitors the opportunity to meet companies that are rarely seen in the UK. Examples this year include Swiss ceramic component specialist, Ceramaret, KS Terminals from Taiwan, Cosel Europe and Yamaichi Electronics from Germany and Transfer Multisort Elekronik, one of Europe’s leading distributors of electronic products and components. New for

2018 is Fuji Electric Europe, one of the big names in inverter and energy management for industrial applications. At the show, Fuji Electric will display high performance inverters that offer automatically controlled motor operations, aimed at reducing overall energy consumption and minimising operating costs in AC drive applications ranging from conveyor systems, pumps, fans, HVAC and lift applications. Machinery is also another big attraction, with an impressive line-up of international manufacturers running live demonstrations of the latest machining centres and press brakes. XYZ Machine Tools focuses attention on its UMC-5X simultaneous five-axis, gantry-style, machining centre. XYZ says that the feature-rich and competitively-priced UMC-5X is introducing a whole new group of potential customers to the benefits of simultaneous five-axis machining. Alongside this will be other types of production hardware, too. Nabertherm will promote its extensive range of furnaces and heat treatment systems, encompassing everything from compact hardening furnaces to fully-automatic plants with conveying technology and process documentation. Rösler, manufacturer of surface finishing and preparation equipment, highlights among other solutions, a centrifugal mass finishing machine in operation. This technology allows rapid finishing of smaller, robust parts. Southern Manufacturing is also a great place to source solutions such as plant, storage and handling equipment. New exhibitor, Kardex, supplies tailored solutions to meet particular factory workflows. Goods with a total weight of up to 6,000kg per location can be efficiently integrated into storage logistic processes. Using flexible designs such as vertical lift and carousel systems, Kardex is focused on optimising the use of available space, making the most of existing ceiling height and minimising footprint. Alongside a range of compressors and vacuum pumps, compressed air specialist,

BCAS, will demonstrate the benefits of creating nitrogen in-house. Taking control of a nitrogen supply, rather than relying on a third party, can reduce costs considerably, says the company. Compared with traditional methods of supply, an on-site nitrogen generation system offers a short payback time on investment, usually within nine months to two years. A full listing of exhibitors and a searchable database of the products on show can be found at http://exhibitors.industrysouth.co.uk. Pre- registered visitors also receive a free comprehensive show guide and a free 12-page preview magazine.

THREE-DAY SEMINAR PROGRAMME Southern Manufacturing’s free technical seminar programme also returns this year. The programme for 2018 provides its usual high standard of presenters drawn from industry, academia and commerce. A total of 34 sessions over three days will address a wide range of technical, business and regulatory topics; subjects that will appeal to everybody involved in engineering enterprise. Among the hot topics is the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulations, which come into force on 25 May 2018. The rules affect any firm processing personal data, introducing new requirements and eye-watering fines for transgressions. Dave Smith of Corpdata shares the essential knowledge to help keep manufacturing firms compliant and safe. Other topics include Lean, CE Marking, life after Brexit for manufacturers, Industry 4.0 and the use of collaborative robots in the workplace. All sessions are completely free to both visitors and exhibitors. Admission to the show is free and Farnborough Exhibition and Conference Centre offers free on-site car parking.
