The 2017 winners of the Manufacturing Champions Awards were revealed last month at a gala ceremony in Manchester hosted by broadcaster, Steph McGovern. Nine winners, showcasing innovation and a commitment to add value to customers, were recognised across categories including Manufacturing

Team, Community & Skills Champion and the Unsung Hero Awards. “The award winners are all people

who have made a real impact on their businesses,” said Jon Benson, managing director of publishing company, MA Business. “All the finalists showcase everything that’s great about British manufacturing

and prove that a career in manufacturing is rewarding and something worth aspiring to.” Top talent recognised at the

Manufacturing Champions Awards included Rising Star Award winner, Kodi Gledhill, from Coca-Cola European Partners, who was recognised for both her engineering skill and for her work encouraging more women into manufacturing. Also, Safe Workplace Champion Award winner Fraser Rankine, of Farne Salmon & Trout, was acknowledged for his tireless efforts to reduce onsite accidents and mental health at the company’s site in Duns. New to this year’s awards was also

Full story and winners list can be read on Factory Equipment online.

SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC COMMITS TO 100 PER CENT RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY

A

s we head into a new year exhibition season begins

again and Southern Manufacturing is just around the corner - see our full preview from page 6. It’s also been announced that I’ll be a judge for the Talent in Logistics Awards, taking place in June! So I’ll soon be deliberating over the worthy winners who’ve made a significant contribution to their companies and across the transport and logistics sector. Elsewhere, as productivity gains become the collective goal for UK manufacturing, this year could see many more businesses adopt advanced production technologies and automated solutions in order to keep up with their foreign competitors. A recent study found that if the UK became as automated as some of the world’s leading countries in this area, like Japan, Germany and Sweden, productivity would increase by 22.3 per cent. Therefore, as the Fourth Industrial Revolution continues to develop, the UK’s ability to compete means we must quickly find further ways to become more productive.

Schneider Electric has committed to sourcing 100 per cent renewable electricity and is throwing light on the doubling of its energy productivity. The company strongly believes

it cannot go renewable without ensuring optimisation of its energy system first. Today’s commitments are yet another step in Schneider Electric’s journey to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Aligned with these commitments, Schneider Electric decided to join two

global, collaborative initiatives, led by The Climate Group and bringing together influential businesses committed to accelerating climate action: RE100: To use 100 per cent

renewable electricity by 2030 with an intermediary objective of 80 per cent by 2020. EP100: To double energy

productivity by 2030, against a 2005 baseline, setting an ambitious target to double the economic output from every unit of energy consumed.

CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION FOR BRIGGS

Briggs Equipment began working with Cummins back in 1998 and today Cummins Briggs’ stands at almost 600 machines across 12 sites, and the companies have worked closely together to help improve efficiency and safety. As a result, Briggs was recently recognised for supplier innovation for its material handling solutions at Cummins Europe, Middle East and Africa Supplier Awards. Cummins identified that the reason for the award centred on a new production line trailer delivery system - a series of custom-made trailers that allow a flexible and efficient way for Cummins to feed its production lines with parts in pedestrianised, non-forklift areas. Elsewhere, Briggs Defence has been providing

global equipment supplies and support to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for 20 years and is planning to commemorate this with a celebration this month. This specialist division of Briggs Equipment now provides not only equipment but also specialist logistics solutions incorporating asset management and engineering support.
