OPERATOR TO MODEL ELECTRICITY GRID IN 3D

A

dvanced 3D digital modelling of the UK's electricity grid will be launched by

electricity network operator SP Energy Networks, as it plans to introduce Fugro’s virtual technology to reduce the risk of power cuts and prepares for the introduction of the technology across its network in the future. It follows an extensive trial by SP Energy

S

chneider Electric has collaborated with Edmundson Electrical to open four electric vehicle (EV) centres of excellence. The centres, in Manchester, West Bromwich, Glasgow and

Twickenham, are partnered with Schneider to develop expertise around smart, interoperable EV charging systems. This will support contractors in meeting growing EV infrastructure and energy demands. Since 2015, the number of ultra-low emission vehicles has

quadrupled. As the market continues its rapid growth, the demand for EV energy management system knowledge will increase. As EV charging systems scale in size and complexity, the opening of the centres will enable Edmundson Electrical and Schneider to deliver expertise, training and support to the UK EV charging installation market. “With the growth of low emission vehicles across the UK, we

need to have the best possible knowledge base. Investing in the creation of excellence centres with Schneider Electric means we can utilise their knowledge to ensure we can help our contractors develop new skills, broaden our customer base and improve standards,” said Andrew Fawcett, business development manager at Edmundson Electrical.

Networks since 2014, which led to all UK network operators adopting its current system. The major upgrade will use innovative technology developed by Fugro to map the entire network using virtual world visualisation tools. Fugro has been awarded a three-year

contract to develop a precise model of SP Energy Networks’ complete overhead line network using 3D models and advanced analytics. They will record the network using aerial survey data, which will ultimately be used to identify where vegetation and other external factors may disrupt the network. Under the new contract, Fugro will capture

LiDAR data and aerial imagery to create an accurate 3D representation of the distribution network, down to the centimetre. The model, which will cover over 41,000km of SP Energy Networks’ areas, will provide a digital foundation for asset inspections that will reduce the number of on-site surveys and audits and increase efficiency in vegetation and ground clearance management.

FIRST BREXIT ROUNDTABLE HELD WITH BUSINESSES B

usiness Secretary Andrea Leadsom has held her first Brexit roundtable with a range of businesses on supporting employers to prepare for leaving EU on 31 October 2019.

Senior representatives from businesses including Scottish Power, General Electric and BAE Systems told the

business secretary how they were ready and determined to seize the opportunities of a post-Brexit Britain. They explained that while there were some concerns about readiness for a no-deal Brexit, none of the issues were insurmountable and that they were keen to take up the chance to trade both with EU member states, and countries outside the EU. Leadsom urged the businesses to pass on the clear message that the government stands behind them and is ready to support efforts to prepare for Brexit. She also encouraged them to continue their positive approach to the future, and to talk about the opportunities that lie ahead.
