development, it's about what they achieve for themselves and, importantly, for others.

A lot of boundaries are just perceived,

rather than actual obstacles. I love how much a person can achieve, we shouldn't have a preconceived idea about that, but instead just be completely open. The art of the possible is just a mindset.

How does that manifest itself in your journey with McDonald's? It's about knowing and understanding the people you're working with, what their motivation is and what they're good at. And then helping them see it for themselves and develop it. Preconceptions of limits can be

shattered, and relatively quickly. For example, we set goals like: How many customers can we serve in a day? An hour? Records tumble all the time! And then it just breeds a confidence, a passion and a belief and one we hold collectively; in the business, in the community. My job is to get my people in the right

roles in our organisation, to give them the skills, the belief, the vision and the passion. And when they go on to exceed their expectations, they just go to the next level!

whatever happened would be the right decision. McDonald’s know their business, their model, what success looks like and what characteristics it takes to achieve it. They'll be the ones to know whether I'm right or not. Even if they turn me down, there will be a good reason. Ultimately, you have to be yourself

to determine if you’re the right fit for the brand because if you are in the right environment, and put the effort in, you will absolutely thrive. The process gives McDonald's the opportunity to

see me for who I am and to think: Is he right for us?

Which they did, evidently! That must be among your high points! It is, and without sounding corny, what I absolutely hate to see is unfulfilled potential. What if I'd have listened to that headmaster that discouraged me from becoming a lawyer? What path would I have taken? I just don't believe that anyone should have limitations put on them. It's not just about an individual's

What would you say to somebody who's thinking about becoming a McDonald's franchisee? It’s like my rocking chair moment – ask yourself: "What do you want? Do you love the brand? If you do, why? Is it the community aspect? The people? The customer? Is it values-driven?" If you can answer those, then understand the brand and research, research, research! And just be really brave, open up, throw yourself into it. What’s the worst that could happen? If it doesn’t go forward, at least you’ll know. The travesty would be if you held back and didn't try – life's too short!
