see how different organisations run, I picked up a lot of new ideas that I could bring back and implement.

Do you think you shared the same excitement getting your own restaurant as any other candidate? Definitely! The interview and the application process are certainly rigorous. It's not a given that just because you're Next Generation, you’ll get in. You have to show by your own merits that you’ll make a good fit, that you have the drive and the skills that they're looking for. So, yes, it’s still an exciting milestone

for me too – a real proud moment. Although you don’t have to take over the family restaurant as a Next-Generational candidate, I did buy one from my dad, so there's a connection for me of carrying on what he's established and to build it further in my own right. It’s personal to me and my family that it’s going to continue.

What do you find most rewarding about running your McDonald’s franchise? Working with people, empowering the team, putting that time and effort into developing them, promoting them into new roles. One of the questions that McDonald's

asks is: “How do you define success?” For me, that was always about being a business that people want to stay with long-term and grow with. I want to develop the kind of team that supports that ambition. Every time I see the effects of having achieved it, I find that really rewarding. What I value most about the day-to-

day business is the energy across the restaurants. There’s a strong, positive atmosphere, which is why I enjoy being in my restaurants – while I’m there to connect with people and keep things moving, it’s the culture that truly sets them apart. Plus it's a fast-paced environment, so there's always that high-energy feeling.

How would you describe the McDonald’s core values? Passion. The drive for results. It’s a people business. You need to enjoy working with people, both customers and your own team. With the franchise network,

something that really stood out to me when I started the training, is that everybody's really collaborative, they want to help one another, they’re all really open to communication. If you've got a question, yes, you can go

to the Franchise Team at head office, to your Franchisee Consultant, but you've also got a network of franchisees who might know the answer. And you, in turn, are just as happy to help them out too – it's a really strong support system. McDonald's offers a fantastic

opportunity. There's the structure, the collaboration, the training is brilliant, you've got the freedom of being a

business owner, but you've got that framework and fantastic brand power – if you’re looking to become a franchisee, you want that business to be McDonald's.

Any advice for those looking at franchising with McDonald’s? Definitely do your research. Visit The Franchise Exhibitions and speak to people from the Franchising Team – they’re really supportive towards applicants, but there's also franchisees there who can answer questions such as what a typical day is like. franchisees are really happy to speak to people that are interested, so reach out!
