The new battle rhythm
Drones are reshaping warfare, security and industry. Joanna Bailey, editor of ADS Advance, explores the opportunities, challenges and choices facing the UK.
O
n Ukraine’s front lines, drone warfare does not stand still long enough to become settled doctrine.
A successful countermeasure can be overtaken within weeks by a new frequency, flight profile or guidance system. Fibre-optic FPV drones have
emerged to defeat jamming, interceptor drones now hunt one-way attack systems, and platforms are becoming increasingly specialised for reconnaissance, relay, and deep- strike missions. In little more than six months of 2026,
Ukraine approved 413 new uncrewed aerial systems for military use, almost all domestically produced and more than 30% above the same period last year. The lesson is not simply that drones
have become important weapons. It is that the entire cycle of warfare has accelerated. Operational feedback travels from the battlefield to engineers and manufacturers, with new systems rapidly tested, modified, approved and returned to frontline units.

The conflict with Iran has reinforced the same logic at strategic scale. Relatively inexpensive one-way attack drones can be launched in large numbers, stretch sophisticated air defences and force vastly more expensive interceptions. They can threaten airfields, ports, energy infrastructure and civilian populations, while placing the advantage with an attacker able to manufacture and launch at scale. Britain has recognised the change. The Defence Investment Plan commits more than £5 billion to advanced uncrewed systems over the remainder of this Parliament. It includes £1.5 billion for a Hybrid Navy combining crewed warships with uncrewed surface and underwater vessels, alongside new autonomous systems for the Army and collaborative combat aircraft designed to operate with RAF fighters. A further £790 million is intended to strengthen protection of the UK and overseas bases from drone, missile and air threats. The Government has also established a Defence Uncrewed
Systems Centre in Swindon and a taskforce intended to embed autonomy across the Armed Forces. Around it, an emerging industrial cluster is bringing together testing, manufacturing and companies developing systems shaped by experience in Ukraine. Beyond defence, regulation is beginning to shift. New class-marking and Remote ID requirements came into force in 2026, while controlled trials and a more experimental regulatory approach are intended to make beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations routine. That could unlock medical deliveries, infrastructure inspection, emergency response and a much larger commercial drone market. Today, Britain stands at a
crossroads. Drones present an urgent challenge to homeland security and military readiness, but also a significant industrial opportunity. Seizing it will require more than investment announcements. Policy, regulation, procurement, manufacturing and skills must move together, at something much closer to drone speed.
