GCAP advances towards the flightline


The UK's ambitions for next-generation combat air took several steps forward this summer as the Global Combat Air Programme moved decisively from vision to delivery. A £4.6 billion contract awarded to Edgewing, the joint venture formed by industry partners in the UK, Italy and Japan, will carry the programme into its next phase of design and development, giving fresh momentum to one of Britain's most important long-term defence projects. The award arrived alongside the Defence Investment Plan's £8.6 billion commitment to GCAP over the next four years, reaffirming the programme's place at the centre of future UK air power. More than a replacement for Typhoon, GCAP is envisaged as a connected family of capabilities that brings together crewed and uncrewed aircraft, advanced sensors, weapons, and digital networks. BAE Systems' Combat Air Flying Demonstrator is well into assembly in Lancashire and remains on course for its first flight in 2027, providing the clearest sign yet that the aircraft taking shape today could become the backbone of combat air operations in the decades ahead. Interest in the programme is growing,


too. Canada joined as GCAP's first observer nation during Farnborough International Airshow, while reports suggest Singapore has opened exploratory discussions about potential involvement. This reflects the growing international attention being paid to a programme that is increasingly viewed not only as a strategic defence capability, but as one of the most important aerospace opportunities of its generation.

• Training meets AI


The Ministry of Defence has launched a £2 billion programme that will use artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and immersive digital environments to train up to 60,000 British soldiers a year. Awarded to the Omnia Training consortium, led by Raytheon UK, the 15-year initiative aims to blend live exercises with virtual and constructive simulations, allowing troops to rehearse increasingly complex scenarios in realistic digital settings. The programme is expected to


support around 400 jobs and forms part of the wider transformation outlined in the Defence Invest- ment Plan.


• Supply chain boost The Government has proposed a £100 million fund to strengthen the UK aerospace supply chain, helping companies invest in new technology, improve productivity and build resilience.


The initiative will support manufacturers facing growing demand from civil and defence aerospace programmes while addressing long- standing challenges around capability, capacity and competitiveness.


• Islander returns home Britten-Norman marked a milestone for UK aviation with the rollout of the first new Islander aircraft built in the UK for many years. Produced at the company's refurbished manufacturing facility, the aircraft represents a significant step in the revival of domestic aircraft production. The Islander remains one of Britain's most recognisable aircraft, valued around the world for its rugged performance and ability to operate from short and remote airstrips. The rollout highlights renewed confidence in UK aerospace manufacturing and signals a new chapter for a programme that has remained in continuous demand for decades.
