Winchester House School
How fun and joy can shape success
Antonia Lee, Head at Winchester House School in Brackley, shares her views on the power of joy in the school day.
“It’s no secret that happy children thrive. Research from the Children’s Commissioner for England highlights that children who enjoy their school day are more likely to achieve academi- cally, while studies from the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Education have shown that play and enjoyment are essential in de- veloping creativity, problem-solving skills and emotional resilience. At Winchester House, we wholeheartedly embrace the idea that fun and laughter are vital to a child’s education. Our approach is built on a simple but profound be-
lief: children learn best when they are interested, engaged and excited about their day. This philosophy underpins every aspect of school life, from lessons to breaktimes. Whether it’s mastering a challenging concept in the classroom, building dens in the Secret Garden or singing their hearts out in the music room, Winchester House pupils are encouraged to approach their learning with energy, curiosity and joy. T e magic of Winchester House lies not only in these moments
of fun but in their far-reaching benefi ts. When children enjoy what they’re doing, they are more likely to take risks, persevere with chal- lenges and think creatively. T ese attributes are vital for academic success but also for building resilience and confi dence – skills that will serve them throughout their lives. We create an environment where joy is the norm - an atmosphere that helps pupils form deep connections with their peers and teachers, making the school feel like a second home. Our co-curricular programme is central to this ethos, off ering
children opportunities to discover their passions and develop new skills. Activities such as skiing, chess, Lego, acrylic jewellery mak- ing and debating encourage pupils to explore their potential in a fun and supportive setting. T ese experiences complement their
academic development, helping them grow into well-rounded, confi dent individuals. It is often diffi cult to tell whether the adults or children are having
more fun at Winchester House as it is usually both - but this fun is ‘serious fun’ led by creative and skilled practitioners who know how to make learning joyous. Happy children are engaged learners, creative thinkers and resilient problem-solvers who are ready to em- brace life’s challenges with positivity and determination. Education is about more than exams – it’s about nurturing the whole child. At Winchester House, we ensure every pupil experiences the joy of learning, the pride of achievement and the laughter that makes school days unforgettable.”
