IN MEMORIAM 1960s


The Honorable Moody R. Tidwell III ’65, of the United States Court of Federal Claims, passed away on April 2, 2026, at the age of 87. Judge Tidwell was appointed to the United States Court of Federal Claims by President Ronald Reagan in 1983 and took senior status in 1998.


Griffin Vann Canada Jr. ’66 passed away on December 31, 2025. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Edna L. “Jerry” Canada; daughters Mary Scott Canada (Martin), Susan (Canada) Somerville, Elizabeth “Patch” Canada (Chris); his son, Griffin Vann Canada, III;and three grandchildren: Noah, Grayson and Sarah.


Michael Dearington ’67 passed away on July 18, 2025, at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife, Gerry; his children, Meredeth, Bob and Mike; and his eight grandchildren.


Edward Saul Gershuny ’67 passed away on September 18, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frieda; his daughters, Beth and Jill; his son-in-law, Andrew; and his granddaughters, Isabel and Lindsay.


Patrick Smyth ’67 passed away on October 5, 2025. Pat’s life was a testament to perseverance, love and joy. His spirit lives on in the people he inspired, the family he cherished, and the simple, powerful belief that every day truly is a great day.


1970s


Fred Drasner ’71 passed away on April 4, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Lora Drasner; his brother, Ken Drasner; and his daughters, Johanna Haban and Amanda Drasner. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Windsor.


Samuel, J. Halpern ’71 passed away in 2024 aſter practicing law for more than 50 years. He started his career as a law clerk to a state judge, then served as an assistant state attorney for eight years, aſter which

he opened and maintained his own solo law practice. Sam had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed many friends among his classmates.


Paul Stephen Beard ’71 passed away on September 30, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Mary Flesner Beard; his children, Brian, Dean and Jennifer; stepchildren, John, Jamie and Anna Mary; and his grandchildren, Bella, Gianna, Isaac, Keira, Gia and Pipe.


Francis Biros ’77 passed away on August 8, 2025. He was a devoted husband to Estelle Belisle and a loving father to Ellen and Jeffrey. He was also a granddad to Matthew, Megan, Samantha and Quinn.


Joseph Hartzler ’78 passed away on December 18, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, whom he met at AUWCL; their sons, Alex, Adam and Matthew; and his grandchildren, Abraham, Faye, Emil, Gertrude and Etta.


David Edward Springer ’79 passed away on August 27, 2025, at the age of 72. David is survived by his mother, Barbara; his wife, Patricia; his sons, Agee and Chapman; and his grandchildren, Samuel and Robert.


1980s


Ruth Mary (Wimer) Chorba ’80 passed away on October 15, 2025. She is survived by her husband, Tim; her sons, Tim Jr., Christian and William; her granddaughter, Aurelia; her seven siblings; and a wide circle of extended family, friends and colleagues who will miss her deeply.


Linda “Lindy” High ’81 passed away on July 31, 2025. She is survived by her brother, Thomas, as well as many nieces and nephews.


1990s


Linda Anzalone Woolley ’96 passed away on February 20, 2026. She is


predeceased by her husband of 46 years, George Woolley; and is survived by her children, Charlotte Stewart, Nina Ragunanthan, and stepdaughter, Jennifer Skinner; and her five grandchildren, Sarah, Isabelle, Cecily, William and Priya.


Community Members


Laurie Brogdon passed away on March 23, 2025. Laurie served as the director of Alumni Outreach and Annual Giving with the Office of Advancement for over three years before departing in February 2024. During her time at AUWCL, Laurie championed student engagement, advocated for strategic communication to alumni and supporters, and collaborated with program areas. Laurie is survived by her mother, six siblings, numerous nephews and nieces, extended family, and friends.


Gary McCann, professor/law librarian Emeritus, passed away on July 12, 2025, at his home in Palm Springs, California. Gary joined the Pence Law Library in 1979 as the first associate director for readers’ services and later became the associate director for administration. He joined the ranks of the emeriti upon his retirement in 2003. He is survived by his husband of 38 years, U.S. Naval Academy Professor Emeritus Todd Garth.


Edwin Ray Hazen Jr., the first associate dean of students for AUWCL, passed away in January 2026.


Norman Eule, a former adjunct faculty member, passed away on July 28, 2025. Norman was a beloved professor teaching courses in the Business Law Program at AUWCL. He is survived by his wife, Ella; his son, Alexander; his daughter- in-law, Michelle; his niece, Jenny; and his two granddaughters, Madeline and Sylvie.
