Still Here: Celebrating Professor Ira Robbins’ 50 Years of
Teaching Law Fifty years ago, Ira Robbins walked into a law school classroom as a professor for the first time. He has not stopped since.
This year, American University Washington College of Law celebrates half a century of teaching from Distinguished Professor of Law and Barnard T. Welsh Scholar Ira P. Robbins, one of the longest-serving and most beloved members of the AUWCL faculty. Over five decades, Robbins has taught nearly 10,000 students across courses in Criminal Law, Conflict of Laws and Post- Conviction Remedies, among others. His classroom style is equal parts rigorous and warm, driven by genuine curiosity about what his students are thinking and a belief that even the heaviest material can coexist with laughter. That combination has made his courses a defining experience for generations of AUWCL graduates.
His influence extends well beyond the classroom. Robbins is a prolific scholar whose work has been cited in more than 100 judicial opinions, the Congressional Record, and a Restatement of the Law. Meetings with his research assistants, he has said, are among the highlights of his
