Faculty Excellence Scholarship, Leadership and Global Impact
AUWCL faculty continued to shape major legal conversations throughout the past year through influential scholarship, national and international presentations, public engagement, and leadership across the legal profession.
In an annual celebration of those achievements, the 2026 Faculty Scholarship and Teaching & Service Awards honored outstanding contributions that continue to shape legal education, scholarship and the broader profession.
Distinguished Professor Susan Carle received the Pauline Ruyle Moore Award for her article “Liquidation and the Fourteenth Amendment,” and Professor Lewis Grossman was also recognized with the Pauline Ruyle Moore Award for “Criminalizing Transgender Care.” The Edwin A. Mooers Award honored Professor Matthew Erie for “Property as National Security,” an ambitious and wide-ranging examination of the tensions between open markets and national security concerns and Distinguished Professor Ira Robbins for “Deconstructing Burglary,” a work commended for its clarity, historical grounding and practical contributions to modern criminal law. Professor Stephen Wermiel ’82 received the Excellence in Teaching Award for his commitment to student mentorship, innovative pedagogy, and leadership in

strengthening the academic experience. The Outstanding Service Award was presented to Professors Aryan Kushan and Claudia Martin for their exceptional contributions both within the law school and in the broader legal community. Professor Dale Durrer was honored with the Adjunct Teaching Award, recognizing outstanding instruction and meaningful student engagement. Professor Charles Ross received the Innovation in Pedagogy Award for his creative and forward-thinking approach to teaching, including the effective use of technology in the classroom.
The AUWCL community also honored Interim Dean Heather Hughes for her two years of leadership. In presenting the award, Professor Elizabeth Beske, senior associate dean for faculty and scholarship, praised Hughes for her tireless service, steady leadership during a challenging period, and unwavering commitment to the AUWCL community.

“Inclusive Socratic Teaching: Why Law Schools Need It and How to Achieve It,” published scholarship examining reproductive justice, legal representation deserts, and talent recruitment practices within the legal profession.
Professor Hilary Allen remained a leading national voice on fintech, cryptocurrency, AI and financial stability. Her work included congressional testimony before the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services, numerous publications and media appearances, and presentations at major conferences in the U.S. and abroad.
Professor Charles Duan advanced scholarship at the intersection of intellectual property, business, and technology, including copyright,
patent law, artificial intelligence, and pharmaceutical litigation.
Professor N. Jeremi Duru continued his national and international work examining diversity, leadership, and equity in sports with scholarship and presentations exploring the Rooney Rule, athlete activism, and inclusive hiring practices across professional sports.
The ACLU National Board of Directors elected Professor Lia Epperson to its Executive Committee, and the Rights4Children recognized her with the Scholarship Award for research examining AI’s impact on students’ constitutional rights and autonomy.
