Leveling the Playing Field: Tackling Racial Abuse in Sports


On Nov. 19, 2024, the AUWCL Sport & Society Initiative, American University School of International Service, and Football for Peace hosted an impactful discussion, “Leveling the Playing Field: Tackling Racial Abuse in Sports.” Moderated by Professor Jeremi Duru, the panel featured Dominique Badji (D.C. United), Allen Hopkins Jr. (executive director, Black Players for Change), Andrew V. Morris III (public policy counsel, NFL Players Association), and Jessica Wright, Esq., LLM, MBA (general counsel, D.C. United and DC Power FC). Together, they shared powerful insights on addressing racial abuse in sports.


Attorney and Climate Activist, Steven Donziger


Professor Bill Snape hosted a fireside chat on Nov. 21, 2024, with attorney and climate activist Steven Donziger. Donziger successfully sued Texaco and Chevron on behalf of native Ecuadorians for contaminating water in the Amazon rainforest. Donziger discussed his groundbreaking case and the importance of continuing legal activism from a new generation of lawyers.


Honorable Gerald Bruce Lee ’76


A special visit by the Honorable Gerald Bruce Lee ’76 on Nov. 12, 2024, provided an inspiring space for WCL Black Law Student Association (BLSA) students, faculty and staff to come together. Students gained valuable encouragement and insights.


Mid-Atlantic Clinical Conference


In 2024, the AUWCL Clinical Program was honored to host the third annual Mid-Atlantic Clinical Conference, centered around the theme “Teaching Through Turbulence.” An impressive 100 clinical faculty from across the region and beyond attended the event, which featured a spoken word presentation, an opening plenary panel with clients represented by the clinic, engaging concurrent sessions on clinical teaching and lawyering, scholarship presentations, and conference bingo.
