FROM THE DEAN’S DESK

HEATHER HUGHES Interim Dean

Today, the legal profession is called to advance the rule of law in every matter we undertake. Our AUWCL community is meeting this call.

As our graduating class joined our esteemed alumni in May, I remarked that some will go on to defend the rule of law loudly and in public, fighting for justice as litigators, elected officials, and activists. Others will advance the rule of law quietly and in private, weaving the web of legally sound market and private relations on which we all rely. Together, we apply the values instilled at AUWCL to safeguard the future of our law-based system of governance.

Alumni and faculty have mobilized in recent months, creating opportunities for our students affected by the changes in federal government hiring. Alumni have welcomed students and recent graduates into their practices. The law school has launched the WCL Summer 2025 Rule of Law, Human Rights, and Community Values Project, pairing rising 2Ls and 3Ls with faculty- and staff-supervised projects in a range of pertinent areas. We look forward to seeing the meaningful contributions this project will produce.

Our faculty continues to teach, publish, and convene at AUWCL and around the world to shape knowledge and affect outcomes on consequential topics. Their energy and resourcefulness are boundless.

I hope that this issue of The Advocate encourages you to reconnect with your peers and take great pride in the

extraordinary contributions of our alumni, faculty, staff, and students. It was a joy, at commencement, to welcome the Class of 2025 into our illustrious alumni community. With more than 22,000 graduates, AUWCL’s alumni network is not only our largest constituency, but also our most diverse. The friendships, success, and impact that define our alumni impress me every day.

From Gloria Allred’s powerful commencement message, to President Jon Alger’s inspiring vision for our university and law school, to alumni shaping justice from the bench and boardroom, to students and faculty at the forefront of legal change, our community is a distinct and bold force in the legal profession. May this dynamic magazine spark memories, strengthen connections, and remind you of all that we can achieve together in our shared mission to Champion What Matters!
