When Stephen Rabinowitz ’86 looks back on his time at American University Washington College of Law, he recalls a transformative experience — one that shaped his career and inspired a lasting commitment to give back. Now, through the creation of the Rabinowitz Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, Rabinowitz is supporting the next generation of law review students with the same spirit of purpose and generosity that defined his own journey.
Rabinowitz’s motivation for launching the scholarship stems from his desire to give back to the community and support future law students. “If you can, make life easier for the next generation of people, or at least no harder than it was for you,” Rabinowitz explained, highlighting his belief in paying it forward.
Rabinowitz fondly recalled his law school experience, emphasizing the personal growth and academic enrichment he gained while at WCL. “I had a great time in law school,” he stated, highlighting the unique experience of living in a city and the purely academic nature of law school.

His involvement with the American University Law Review was particularly impactful, providing him with invaluable teamwork and organizational skills. “It creates the first real experience of working on a team,” Rabinowitz noted, underscoring the importance of collaboration and meeting deadlines and how pivotal that is for a legal career.
The scholarship is specifically intended to honor law review students, recognizing the hard work and dedication they invest in their studies and the journal. “It’s a lot of work to take on other than your academics, and I think I wanted to support those students in particular,” Rabinowitz said.
Rabinowitz shared valuable advice for current law students and recent graduates. He stressed the importance of focusing on academics, working hard, and believing in oneself. “You have to believe that if you are in the environment, you are capable of succeeding in it,” Rabinowitz said.
The establishment of the The Rabinowitz Family Endowed Scholarship Fund by Stephen Rabinowitz is a testament to his commitment to AUWCL and its students. His generosity will undoubtedly create new opportunities for future generations of law professionals.
