Virginia Lamb ’75 passed away on Sept. 25, 2024, aſter a lengthy battle with cancer.
Dale Sanders ’77 passed away on April 10, 2025. He is survived by his husband, Christian Samonte, his sister, Joyce, and his brother, Wade.
Gail Kursh ’79 passed away on March 30, 2025. She is survived by her husband, Zev, and her daughters, Talia and Maya.
1980s
Gisela Bialik Huberman ’80 passed away on Dec. 10, 2024. She is a WCL alumna and a former professor and chairwoman of the Linguistics Department at American University.
Debra Long-Doyle ’81 passed away on Oct. 16, 2024. She is survived by her daughters, Michaela and Skyler.
Dianne Ritz ’81 passed away on Nov. 9, 2022.
Nancy Moran ’82 passed away on Feb. 11, 2025. She is survived by her sister, Margaretl, two nieces, Catharine and Winifred, three nephews, William, David, and Robert, and many grandnephews and nieces.
Lewis Wiener ’87 passed away on April 29, 2024. F. William Hessmer ’88 passed away on Dec. 1, 2020.
1990s Dr. Carol Pretlow ’91 passed away on Dec. 24, 2024.
Derek Dyson ’99 passed away on Oct. 2, 2024. He is survived by his two children, Derek Robert Anthony Dyson and Cecelia Olivia Elizabeth Dyson.
2000s
Beverly Hudnut ’03 passed away on Dec. 29, 2024. She is survived by her son Christopher.
2010s
Steven Oppenheimer ’15 passed away in May 2024. He is survived by his siblings, Gary, Judith, Marilyn and Tamara.
Sandra Braschi ’16 passed away on June 4, 2025, aſter a battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family in Miami, Florida. She had served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., since January 2020.
The Honorable Peter Messitte passed away on Jan. 11, 2025. As the director of the Brazil-U.S. Legal and Judicial Studies Program at AUWCL, he brought countless members of the Brazilian judiciary to AUWCL, many of whom later returned as
students or visiting scholars.
A dedicated global jurist and educator, Judge Messitte’s legacy at AUWCL extended far beyond the classroom. His commitment to international judicial exchange helped shape a generation of transnational legal leaders. He remained actively engaged with the law school community well into his senior judicial service, fostering meaningful cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, and their children.
Joseph Harbaugh passed away on Oct. 11, 2024. Harbaugh served as a professor at AUWCL from 1984 to 1987. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Britzke, and children Regina, Denise, Laurie, Wendy, Elizabeth, Nicholas, and Andrew.
