What began as a bold idea in 2000 has grown into a transformative force in international legal education and human rights advocacy. For 25 years, the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) has empowered thousands of legal professionals, scholars and students from around the world — fostering a global community committed to justice, equality and the protection of human dignity.


A Global Legacy of Leadership and Community


What began as a visionary initiative has evolved into a dynamic global community of legal professionals and scholars. For 25 years, the Academy has advanced the protection and promotion of human rights through its academic programs, public engagement and international partnerships.


This legacy is made possible by the unwavering leadership of Co-Chairs Professors Claudio Grossman and Robert Goldman, the strategic direction of Co-Directors Claudia Martin and Diego Rodríguez-Pinzón, and the tireless efforts of AUWCL faculty, staff, and a broad network of institutional partners.
