STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

RECIPIENTS Ten students at American University Washington College of Law have been awarded the prestigious Myers Law Scholarship for the 2024–25 academic year — one of the law school’s most distinguished need-based awards.

The Myers Law Scholarship supports full-time JD students who demonstrate academic promise and financial need. The scholarship can cover up to 125% of tuition for one year.

Typically awarded to one or two students each year, the scholarship saw an expansion in 2024–25, with 10 recipients selected. Priority is given to upper-level JD students who receive need-based grants. The award is part of the need-based restricted scholarship application process, which is announced by the WCL Financial Aid Office during the fall semester.

This year’s recipients are:

“ When my husband became dean, the law school became our family,” said Alvina Reckman Myers in 1979. “We both cared deeply about the law and education.”

22 THE ADVOCATE SUMMER/FALL 2025

• Nyia McCree • Melanie Sandoval • David Gagnidize • Jonah Mayer • Sarah Gallant • Jaxzia Perez • Samuel Wolf • Andrew Gamble • Nicole Happ • Sidratul Muntaha

The scholarship was established by former WCL Dean John Sherman Myers (1956–1967) and his wife, Alvinia Reckman Myers, to reduce financial barriers while promoting educational excellence. The award helps students focus on their career aspirations rather than tuition costs and student loan debt.
