Valley MP welcomes latest official figures on inflation
Newly re-elected Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has welcomed the releaseof the latest figures by the Office of National Sta tistics (0 NS) that show a neg ative rate of inflation for the first time on record, and for the first time since i960 on comparable data. Speaking from Westmin
ster this week Mr Evans said: “These figures demonstrate that the Government’s long term economic plan is con tinuing to workand I welcome them. “Over the past year wage
growth was at 2,2%, with price growth being-0.1%.
“The falling rate of infla
tion is due in large part to the continuing fall jn food prices and fuel prices, which is mak ing a real difference to the liv ing standards of the people of rural areas such as the Ribble Valley where cars are a neces sity and not a luxury. “In our area, unemploy
ment is down to a mere 1%, with jobs and wages up and prices down. However, now is not the time to be compla cent and I will spend the next 5 years vocally supporting the Government in its policies to continue to keep our economy on track."

Ex-council boss aims to ‘chalk’
up a best-seller Mayor launches Ossie’s debut novel at village pub

Former council chief Ossie Hopkins got a civic send-off at a pub for his debut novel.
The Mayor of Ribble Valley, Coun. Bridget Hilton, was at theHigherBuck,Waddington, to launch “Chalk for Cheese", a tale of a man and a woman growing up separately in the 1950s and ’60s, seeing the world through different eyes. His characters Jay and
Jill—a privileged Lancashire man growing up in Norfolk, and Jill, a working class Ty-
nesider - were inspired by a
real-life couple who have cel ebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Mr Hopkins, a former
teacher and education author ity chief at Birmingham, was Ribble Valley's chief executive from 1989 to 1997. After leaving, he set up
the Institute for Customer Service, which recognises front-line staff, and took up consultancy work. He also helps son Chris, who lives at Read, with his haulage busi ness. Mr Hopkins (68), who lives
at Grindleton with wife Jo, ex plained that the title “Chalk for Cheese” came from the
unscrupulous medieval mer chants’ practice of passing off chalk for cheese In the hope that people couldn’t tell the difference. “The point is that Jill and
Jay are polar opposites ap parently and anyone will be able to spot the differences between them. Or will they?" He said writing the book
hadhelped him appreciate the expertise of “proper authors” and is planning follow-ups. The book is published by
Silverwood Books, Bristol, at
www.silverwoodbooks.co.uk. available from online retailers such as Amazon and Kindle at £9-99 paperbackand £3.99 eb ook.
