Stonyhurst College's cura tor, Jan Graffius, attended the Beatification Ceremony of Archbishop Oscar Romero in El Salvador's capital, San Salvador.

The invitation was in recogni tion of her work over the last eight years preserving the relics of Monsenor Romero, in addition to those of the six Jesuit Martyrs and their com panions, murdered by Death Squad troops in 1989. Archbishop Oscar Rome

ro of San Salvador spoke out against poverty, social injus tice, assassinations and tor ture. In 1980, at the Church of the Divine Providence, Romero was murdered while saying mass, on'March 24th. It is widely believed that the military backed'Arena gov

ernment ordered his assassi nation, and the murder of six Jesuit priests and two female staff at the University of Cen tral America in 1989. In addition to attending the

ceremony, Jan prepared a very poignant relic to be placed at the Beatification Altar dur ing the ceremony. This is the blood-soaked clerical shirt worn by Archbishop Rome ro when he was murdered. The single bullet hole in the breast pocket bears powerful witness to the fact that the kill ing was carried out by a pro fessional sniper. A specially designed reliquary, weighing some 400lbs, has been built to house the shirt, and it was carried shoulder high by six deacons to the altar. Jan’s task was to prepare the support for the shirt, using museum materials, to ensure that the case has the correct light, tem perature and humidity levels, and to supervise the placing of

A special meeting is being held in Clitheroe as part of celebrations to mark the diamond jubilee of The East Lancashire Ornithologists’ Club (ELOC) - the oldest bird club in Lancashire and the third oldest in the North of England, after Leeds and Manchester. The club was founded in

the shirt and the sealing of the reliquary. After the ceremo ny, the reliquary was placed in the Cathedral of San Salvador, where Archbishop Romero is buried. In London, at the Jesuit

Church in Farm St, the Stony- hurst triptych with a relic of Romero's blood soaked alb, was placedonthealtaronMay 23rd. The triptych is on loan to the Jesuit Province from Stonyhurst, and was painted

by Salvadoran artist Fernan do Llort. It is inscribed with the readings from the mass Romero was saying when he was murdered, and some quo tations from his sermon, sec onds before his death. It was the gift of Stonyhurst’s sixth formers in 2011, and after the Beatification it will return to Stonyhurst, and be placed in the college where it can bear witnesstothe bravery and ho liness of the martyr. .

1955 and to mark this land mark anniversary, a special meeting will be held in The Lecture Theatre at Clithe: roe Royal Grammar School’s Sixth Form Centre on York Street on Tuesday June 2nd starting at 7-30 pm. Ad mission is free and all local birders are invited. Refresh ments will be provided The speaker that evening

will be Dawn Balmer, head of surveys at the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), who is coming all the way from Thetford in Norfolk to speak that evening. The title of her illustrated talk is “Beyond the Maps”, a reference to the 2007-11 survey that mapped the occurrence of every spe cies of bird in Britain and Ireland in both winter and

summer. This culminated in last year’s publication of the most comprehensive Bird Atlas ever produced in these islands. . The Atlas project was a wonderful example of “citi

zen science” in which a large number of dedicated ama teurs do the field work and provide the facts for profes sional scientists to analyse. Dawn will be talking about future projects in which am ateur bird watchers can get involved. ELOC has a long as sociation with BTO and par ticipates in all their surveys. Among the guests invit

ed to this meeting is Profes sor Bill Hale. Bill has spent a lifetime in ornithological re search and was the very first secretary of the ELOC. How many clubs can invite one of their founding officers to their diamond jubilee meet ing? Admittedly he was still a sixth former at CRGS at the time the club was founded. The chairman of ELOC is lo cal ornithologist Tony Coop- er.Formoredetailsaboutthe clubvisit:www.eastlancsor- nithologists.org
