Police are renewing their appeal to homeowners in the Ribble Valley to keep their doors, windows and cars locked at all times.

Statisticsrevealthatsincethe beginning of July, there have been 52 car crimes and 24 house burglaries in the rural borough. Thirty-nine of the 52 car

incidents were due to ve hicles being left unlocked and 12 houses were targeted by raiders who snuck in be cause doors or windows were left open. Clitheroe Police Inspector

Hassan Khan and Sergeant Dave Simpson are urging people not to ignroe their warning and to make sure their homes and vehicles are locked at all times, especially with the dark winter nights drawing in. Sgt Simpson said: “Police

months, officers based at Clitheroe Police Station car ried out an operation where they walked down a street in the town and identified a number of cars that had been left unlocked. “We contacted the owners

and explained the situation to them. However, we just haven’t got the resources to be checking every car and house in the borough. Sim ple steps can be taken to re duce the chances ofbecoming a victim of crime. These are: • Keep front and back doors locked and make sure

windows are closed. • If windows are open,

keep them on the latch so that they cannot be opened further from outside. • Fit a door chain and use

it when answering the door to an unexpected caller. • Keep side gates locked. • Consider putting valu

ables in a’safe. • Use a strong lock on

sheds, garages and other out buildings. • Considerfitting outdoor

security lighting. • Keep an eye on neigh

bouring properties and ifyou see anything suspicious con tact the police. Sgt Simpson added: “Inse

cure properties and vehicles offer easy pickings for oppor tunist thieves. Don’t become a victim of burglary this win ter.” To report suspicious be

haviour or ifyou have any in formation regarding a recent break-in, please contact po lice on 101 or the Crimestop- pers on 0800 555111.
