Earlier this yearWhalley Cubs started working towards their Community Challenge Badge, with one requirement being to “Organise a fund-raising event for a charity of your choice”. They decided to support the North West Air Ambulance and their moneyspinning started

form of a strike from that time until 11 am, and then on wards throughout the week in the form of “action, short of strike”. At present, the Trust does not know what form this will take, but there is a likelihood of the Trust ex periencing a reduction in its available workforce between the hours of 7 am and 11 am on that day. The strike is a legal na
tional one, and is not relat ed to any issue specific to the North West Ambulance Service. The Trust’s Director of
Operations, Derek Cart wright, commented: “We re spect therightforourstaffto take industrial action and we know that the decision will not have been an easy for
them or the unions to take. Our planning aims to ensure
there is as little impact on pa tient care as possible and for this reason, we have main tained a healthy and lengthy dialogue with our trade un ion representatives. “Everyone’s priority is to
make sure that those who need an emergency ambu lance response get one and that has been the focus on all of our discussions. How ever, with a reduced work force, there is likely to be some disruption to the 999 service and delays in reach ing patients.” Next Monday, as always,
the Trust will prioritise in cidents according to urgent clinical need and if calls are received for a minor com plaint patients may be ad vised to seek alternative care or call 111 for further assess ment or advice. Patients who have out-pa
tient appointments and have booked transport with the Trust should contact their clinic and check that their appointment is still going ahead.

Teenagers Hannah Procter andThea Cameron are rising stars on the sports scene... and they’ve got certificates and a £500 prize each to prove it.
The young sporting hopefuls are among Lancashire Sport’s Rising Stars for 2014, win ning £500 each to help them towards their sporting goals, along with specialist support from the University of Central Lancashire. Hannah, 13, from Clithe-
roe, competes in tetrathlon - shooting, swimming, fencing and a combined run/shoot. She finished sixth in the
National Triathlon in May with the fastest swim and the fourth-fastest combined event, and'recently finished second in the under-iss girls age group in the National Tetrathlon. She is nowlooking forward
to movingup into pentathlon. Hannah said: “This award
Friday October 3rd saw the Clitheroe and District Pro bus audience abuzz with an ticipation as they waited for' the speaker to arrive. He didn’t, due to unfore
seen circumstances, but all was not lost. With great pres ence of mind the chairman, Mr Alan Daniels, remained at the lectern and proved, once again, how useful he could be in an emergency. His previous “emergen
cy”, many months ago, was dealt with by delivering a speech about a trip to Po land. Half-way down the famous salt mine he found his off- the-cuff presenta tion interrupted by anoth er emergency, the arrival of paramedics to deal with one of the audience. However, on the latest oc

will help towards the cost of all the riding equipment I • need and riding lessons, so that I will soon be able to competein a full modern pen tathlon.” Thea, 14, from Billington,
has this year won three first places in north-west events
and recently secured a place; on the National Climbing Academy. She said: “I am looking
forward to attending regional and national academies and working with the staff at UCLan to see what ideas they have and support they can

casion, with Alan once again at the helm, the audience completed their descent to the depths of the mine and listened fascinated to the description'of the wonders to be found hundreds of feet below the surface. From the salt mine there
ensued a travelogue covering trips around various parts
of Poland guided by Alan’s Polish friend.Dana - who has been seen on several oc casions exploring Clitheroe and further afield in the UK. Of equal interest to the
scenery and architecture which he described was his • interaction - both intended and accidental - with the Polish citizens he met. An offer from a bar tender for a taster of four local beers resulted in four half-pint glasses - free. Our speaker had to raise his game for that one (the earlier Merlot didn’t help). And so the Probus au
dience, instead of hear ing about, a farm barn conversion with lodge and ornamental gardens, left the Pendle Club somewhat surprised that they were now experts on Polish scen ery, architecture, deep salt mines and social customs. The next speaker is a
return visit of Mr Norman Harris on “The Pacific Coast Highway”. It takes place on October 17th at 10-45 am at the Pendle Club, Lowergate, Clitheroe. Enquiries 01254 823982
