round 170 mem bers of the far ming community joined the Far- imers Walk for

Cancer Charities at different stages of the approximately 80-mile, five-day long event. Backed by a devoted

support team, the walk’s original organisers, Richard Schofield, Helen Bury and Colin Townson, were joined by different members of the farming community each day of the walk which followed a route through the Yorkshire Dales and Hodder Valley. Setting off from Middle-

ton-in-Teesdale Auction Mart on Monday July 28th more than 50 people joined the walk each day with a core group of 10 completing the full walk. The aim of the walk was

to raise funds for cancer charities while, at the same time, raising awareness of rural communities. Richard Schofield, a

sheep shearing tutor for the

British Wool Marketing Board, had always fancied walking from Middleton- in-Teesdale to Slaidburn - an area he knows well through work. He lost his father,

Stephen, aged 74 to throat cancer in 2012 and origi nally suggested the walk to his wife, Jennifer. As word got around,

Richard, of Tosside, was

joined by Colin Townson, of Westcoast 4X4, Clithe- roe, Helen Bury (nee Park er), who lost her mother to cancer and has had the disease herself, plus many others. Epjoying fine weather

for the majority of the walk, the party then faced down pours of torrential rain on Friday as they made their way back to the finish point at Parrack Head, Slaid burn. Here they were wel

comed back by local school pupils, Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans and Lady Clit- heroe. Colin Townson told the

Clitheroe Advertiser: “The weather was brilliant until the final day of the walk, but there were no injuries and it was a very well run

These people helped to make the walk perfect.” He added: “Many people

showed amazing courage to take part and complete the walk. Everyone was walk ing for a reason - to raise awareness of cancer, the charities that provide sup port and to raise awareness of rural communities.” Donations can still be

made until September 1st viawww.justgiving.com/ teams/farmers-walk The total amount raised

by the walk will be an nounced at the Hodder Valley Show on Saturday September 13 th. CDsofthe walk will
