VALLEYENTERTAINMENT A Foggy night in Manchester . . . I l l

The Royal Exchange’s produc tion of “Around the World in 80 Days” is amazing and bril liantly funny. I was so impressed by the

superb and agile cast, but al so by the inventiveness and skill ofthe whole design team. From the opening moments showing Phileas Fogg’s (An drew Pollard) daily routine, through his bet at the Reform Club on to his spectacular

journey, the action moves at a crackingpaceandbringsgales of laughter from the audience. Pushpinder Chani, Okirie

Ghukwu, Susan Hingley and Matthew Rixon play over 90 different parts! Dennis Herd- man is Inspector Fix, who is trying to arrest Fogg, and Re becca Grant is Kamana Aouda, the beautiful widow rescued' by Fogg. However, star of the show is Michael Hugo as Passepartout, awonderfulac-

robatic performance and the most incredible range of facial expressions. Here I must boast a bit. I

read in Mr Hugo’s biog that one of his earliest roles was in “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” at the Oldham Colise um and I remember review ing the production. I reread my comments: “He is clearly an actor with a future. He had the audience laughing and be ing moved in equal parts.” I was right! He is respon

sible for much of the humour in this hilarious production, which is part farce, part cir cus, part homage to the si lent comedy films of actors like Harold Lloyd. So much is the result of excellent techni cal support from the design team, led by Lis Evans, the flowing movement directed by Beverley Edmunds and particularly the sound direc tion of James Earls-Davis and his team which is an essential partofthejokes.

should be congratulated on this super reinterpretation of Jules Verne’s tale in this co production with the New Vic. There were many children in the audience who enjoyed it immensely so I would recom mend it for kids from about eight and over. The Royal Exchange’s Au

tumn season starts with Max ine Peake as Hamlet, which should be very different. Pippa Munro Hebden
