Theheavensopenedattheend of the concert’s first half, per
fectly timed as Slaidburn Silver Band was playing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” as part of a Si mon and Garfunkel medley. Thankfully Clitheroe was
only on the edge of the storm, with thunder and lightning some distance away, and aL though the downpour was fierce, causing a scramble for waterproofs and brollies, the skies cleared again during the interval. Despite poor weather ear
lier in the day there was a good turnout for the popular annual proms concert at the bandstand in Clitheroe Cas tle Grounds, many equipped with picnics and liquid refresh ment. Decked out with Union
Jack flags and hats, the spec- tatorsjoinedinfrom the off as Slaidburn Silver Band deliv ered an eiyoyable and enter taining musical programme,
joined on stage for several items by operatic soprano Ann-Marie Brewer. The band’s conductor, John
Cowking, did a goodjobof enter taining and edu cating the crowd with interesting titbitsofinforma- tionabouteachof the pieces, all delivered in his informal and inimitable style. Several items related to the

the.concert had onceagainproved aresoundingsuc- cess, thanks in no small part to all the “behind-the-
commemorations of the First World War, and John asked the crowd to treat one of them- El gar’s “Nimrod” -as an opportu nity to reflect on the sacrifices of our brave ancestors, with no • applause at the end. It madefor a moving moment in an other wise uproarious evening. The second half concluded
with all the usual prom favour ites - Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory, and Jerusa lem - accompanied by much flag waving and singing from the upstanding crowd. There was also a very en-

a free event, though a collec tion on the night will boost the Clitheroe Town Mayor's fund, which in turn benefits a vari ety of local charities and good causes. All who cocked a snook at
the ominous storm clouds over Clitheroe went home happy and with a song in their heart, if ever so slightly damp.
