--— need? I work in the research and

development department as new product development manager across the whole Tangerine group, covering veterinary, farming and equine products, so it’s necessary

m Hr;-

@ to have a first-class degree in a science-related subject. The area in which you work in will depend on your relevant experience. For example if you want to work on topical

t*— products which are applied to the skin, chemistry would be more useful, whereas if working more on the nutritional, ingested products a degree in biological sciences is more

• relevant. Any other requirements, for

example health and fitness? Knowledge of nutrition

and disease is desirable. An understanding of product formulation is also veiy useful, but not essential at an entry level position. It’s also good

' to be organised and be able to work to deadlines. What sort of starting salary

and p ackage can you expect? Salaries vary depending

on experience. An entry level position as a trainee scientist starts at £18,000. After that the vyorld's your oyster, ' the roles vary from senior development scientist, product development manager, R&D manager, head of research and development manager.

How long does it take to

qualify for the role? A 12-month training period

is sufficient for a trainee to become a product development scientist who is competent in one or more areas of product formulation. However, product development is a continuous learning curve. What sort of personal skills

make someone best suited to this career?

The job role is to research

into a particular area of animal health and turn a concept into a saleable finished product; it is therefore important to be an analytical thinker and observant with your research to ensure that you know your product inside out.

Furthermore a willingness to learn and develop new skills is vital. What kind of job satisfaction

can you expect from this career?

There is nothing more

satisfying than receiving feedback from veterinarians that the product you have developed is improving the health and well-being of the animals they treat or getting a product to market, going to trade shows and seeing it in packaging. What sort of career

prospects and structure is

there? You have the opportunity

to work closely with other departments, such as quality,

Rachel Eaton

regulatory affairs, operations and marketing, presenting opportunities to learn more about different business areas. Science is changing all of the time and as new ingredients and technologies are introduced, opportunities to further your learning and ' progress your career by participating in training courses is readily available.

In 50 words sell your

profession. Working on a project from

product concept to launch is a unique and invaluable experience. If you are passionate about animal health, being involved in product development allows you to have an impact on animal well-being and improve future products for the better.

Frequentheavyrainshowers and an afternoon downpour failed to dampen thespirits of mostofthe128 competitors in the 13th annual Clitheroe Lions' Charity Golf Day at Ciit- heroe Golf Club last Friday.

Although six of the teams abandoned their rounds after a cloudburst flooded some of

thegreensforashort time, the other 26 teams soldiered on to

produce a tight finish with on ly three points separating the first eight places. Leading the field with 81

points was the WalshIBS team of Ian and Jan Walsh, Bill Bar

on and Ian Starkey, one point ahead of the Garavansons team of John Whowell, Jeff Crowther, Steve Alcock and Brian Lang, after a card play off with Tracy Bentley, Emma Byrne, Gary Byrne and Stuart Rogers of Clinchplain in third. The day raised £4,000,

with £2,000 earmarked for Homestart, the Clitheroe cap tain’s nominated charity. Other prize winners were
