Don’t ‘invite the burglars’ in now summer is here

Police are reminding resi dents to secure their prop

erties after an increase in burglaries across the coun ty during the recent warm weather. In almost two out of every

three burglaries across Lan cashire the property has been left insecure, so officers are urging the public to lock up to keep the thieves out. Residents across Ribble

Valley are being urged to: • Close and lock all doors

and windows when they go out, even if they are just in the garden.

• Where possible, fit dead

locks to the doors and not to leave keys where they can be seen or reached through the letterbox. • Install security lights

and consider a burglar alarm. • Remember to cancel

deliveries before going on holi day. • Keep an eye on neigh

bours’ property and encour age them to do the same. Report anything suspicious to the police. • Make sure all outbuild

ings are in good condition. If they are not then don’t leave

anything of value inside. • Use good quality pad

locks with covers, so they can not be easily cut off. • Never leave tools or lad

ders lying around the garden. 0 Make sure side gates and

sheds are locked and keep boundary fences, walls and gates in good repair. 0 Take photographs of

valuable property because if the police recover it after a burglary this will be proof that it is yours. Further crime prevention

advice is available by visiting www.lancashire.police.uk

A Ribble Valley hotelier has been acquitted of assaulting his partner on the day she was leaving him. Blackburn magistrates

heard that Clare Hilary claimed Brendan Woods had pulled out a clump of her hair as he tried to pull her back. But the defence said the

claim was a “total fabrication” by Mrs Hilary whose aim was to get Woods convicted so he would lose his shotgun licence and be forced to get rid of his beloved guns.

Landlord cleared of assaulting partner Woods (56), of the Copy

Nook Hotel, BoIton-by-Bow- land, pleaded not guilty to assaulting Mrs Hilary and was acquitted after a trial. The court heard that Mrs

Hilary had called the police four times in the final four years of their eight years to gether. She said she had never pressed charges because she had invested nearly £100,000 in the business and wanted to protect her interests. Mrs Colleen Dickinson- Jones (defending) suggest

FEATURE

ed that on one occasion Mrs Hilary had thrown a cup of scalding hot tea over Woods. “That’s not true,” replied

Mrs Hilary, who also denied belittling herpartner in front of staff and customers. Mrs Dickinson-Jones

said Woods would suggest he was actually the victim. He claimed he had found a new partner and it was down to Mrs Hilary’s “jealousy and vindictiveness” that the allegation of assault had been made.

perfect warm summer’s eve ning was the icing on the cake ■ when the Clithe-

roe Royal Grammar School

j Year n prom was held at Mytton Fold Hotel, Langho. Pupils arrived by all

manner of transport, from scooters to stretch limos, classic cars, sports cars and on horseback! Dressed in sharp suits

and ball gowns, they looked every inch the young adults they have become while at the school and the many par ents, family members and friends assembled to greet them were filled with pride. The prom committee,

under the guidance of Mrs Kinney, had worked incred ibly hard to create a stun ning room at Mytton Fold, bedecked with baby-blue drapes and balloons. Lilly Dummer’s ban

ner, “The Class of 2014”, was draped across the stage to create a central focus. Following a delicious

meal, Mrs Reeves and Mrs

George spoke warmly about the students’ many achieve ments, and Mrs Woollam announced the winners of the Prom Awards. Prom King and Queen were Adam McMeekin and Megan Taylor. The best dressed female student was Helena Fearnley-Brownand the best dressed male Ashley Mon tague.

The best dressed female

member of staffwas Mrs ' Kinney and the best dressed male staff member was Dr Halstead, whose surprise ap pearance was greatly appreciated. The pupils then took to the dance floor with gusto and everyone, young and “a little older”, enjoyed dancing to the - strains of old favourites and edgy new tracks. Mrs Woollam said: “We '

are incredibly proud of our Year 11 students and we wish them well in their future lives and careers. CRGS is a close community and wher ever life takes you, you will always be a part of CRGS.”
