A CHRISTMAS concert is being staged next month by one of Clitheroe’s best

loved group of musicians. ■ Clitheroe Town Band, which was formed in 1998, is an integral part of town life, with its 30-or-so regular players performing all over the Ribble Valley, at local events. I ts music* h e a rd at

Clitheroe’s Remembrance Sunday service and the civic parade", is also a regular feature at Clitheroe Torchlight Procession, and at the Last Night of.the Proms at Clitheroe Castle bandstand every other year. But the band would not

be able to perform at such functions without the financial support it receives locally through events such as this forthcoming Christmas concert, which will be staged at the St Mary’s Centre on Saturday December 3rd. “We are self-supporting,

us at the Last Night of the Proms concert and other engagements, but probably aren’t aware of how things work financially.” The band, which rents

prem ises in the centre of Clitheroe, near to the market, uses fees raised at performances such as garden fetes, weddings, charity concerts, as well as playing at football matches, hotels and golf clubs, to fund its overheads. The fund-raising family

apart from an annual grant from the council, for which we are grateful, but it only goes a small way to cover our costs,” explained one of the band’s clarinet players, Vanessa Warren.

“We also have quite large

overheads because we have to pay rent for the practice room, electricity and music etc. “The band, I feel, is an

Clitheroe Music in Moor Lane, from the St Mary’s Centre, via the concert hotline - 07884 083220, or on the door. Ticket prices are £5 for

adults, £3 for children, and £15 for a family ticket. There will also be a licensed

bar. Park friends want you to help too

THE Friends of Brungerley Park, in Clitheroe, will hold their annual general meeting on Tuesday, November 29th, at The New Inn, Parson Lane, beginning at 7-30 p.m. Everyone with an interest in the park is warmly invited to attend.

Landlord insurance Costs less than you might think

During the past year, most of the ren

ovation work has been carried out by Ribble Valley Borough Council, using the DEFRA grant which the Friends group secured. The top path has been hard surfaced,

and the steps down to the river removed, to create a smooth path for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The area around the bathing huts has

been opened up, with the steps down to the river cleared, new paths laid and benches there for people to watch the river.

New bushes have been planted to attract wildlife and The Friends erected a notice

board detailing the park’s history', with the help of donations, v Both beds at the Waddington Road

entrance have been cleared and replanted, using generous donations. All the snakehead benches on the middle

path have been repaired and painted, with help from local organisations. Pauline Wood, on behalf of The Friends

of Brungerley Park, said: “This has been a great year for progress, but more needs doing.

ij “Next year we will be having regular

work parties, so come along and be involved in restoring this beautiful park -your park.”

Harry’s death has marked end of an era

By Matthew Lambert

THE death of Henry (Harry) Ainsworth has marked the end of an era. He was the last of a Hurst Green farm

ing family who, since the early 1900s, had been well known throughout the country for. “wood leading”. This was done for many years with heavy horses, sometimes using as many as five horses at once. In later years it was done with a wagon,

■ using a metal cable though a pulley and a device called “three legs”. This powerful piece of equipment was used to haul trees onto the lorry, which Harry would then take for miles to different destinations. Harry, who

died in the Royal Black burn Hospi tal, lived at Bailey Hall Farm with his three old er brothers th ro u g h o u t his early life, until, in the
