WORK to put in place 20mph speed limits on residential roads in the north o f Clitheroe will begin next
week. The scheme supports Lancashire
County Council’s drive to further reduce the number of road accidents involving children and young people, and encour age cycling and walking. Rather than installing further traffic
calming measures, such as speed humps and chicanes, 20mph speed limits will be introduced using signs only by the end of 2013 on all residential streets in. Lanca shire. It is intended for these speed limits to be a catalyst to change driver’s hearts and minds, so that driving at 20mph in
residential areas becomes the norm. Fur ther, engagement with local communities and schools is planned to support the schemes and to encourage a change in driver behaviour.. The scheme for Clitheroe was adver
tised earlier this'year and received 11 letters of siippoit and four objections. Construction of the scheme in north Clit heroe is due to be completed by the end of November orearly December. Lancashire County Council will be
working alongside Lancashire Constabu lary and local communities to address speeding as the 20mph limits are rolled- out. -.

-THERE were no fears but respect for the arachnids from Janet Edmunds in her presentation of “Spiders Home and Abroad” for Clithe roe Naturalists. Mrs Edmunds
and her family had lived in Ghana for 10 years and she had travelled widely, to Australia, South America and-j Panama; with her ': ; husband, Malcolm, taking many slides all the time. Fear of spiders
is common in this country; not so in Africa, where people have other phobias. In the 17th Centu
ry a Dr Muffctmade pills from spiders to stem bleeding, giving rise perhaps to the nursery rhyme “Little Miss Muffet”, and webs can be used to treat ' wounds. ; Spiders come in
all shapes and sizes - th e scorpion is a relation-and their legs are situated on the thorax. The spiders we
see in this coun try seem drab in contrast to those in the southern hemi- - sphere, where bright colours and patterns (cruciform) are used to inhibit predators. Webs protect the
offspring as well as trapping victims and some webs bind the eggs together. Wolf spiders carry their babies on their backs for a few days. Camouflage is
used by some tropi cal spiders, which can change colour and sit in ambush for the unwary. Eyesight is good, all have eight eyes. Bites can be an • irritation to us, but fatal to the prey,-or stunning them as an
. anaesthetic; . Communal
spiders make enor mous webs many feet across, trapping insects. Another ■ type builds its web at night, taking it down during the day. ■ Autumnal pictures of dew on the webs, like fairy lights, brought the talk to a close. Chairman Muriel Carruthers thanked Mrs Edmunds after questions from the . audience. The next lecture
at St Mary’s Centre will be on Thursday November 17th at
1-7-30 p.m. when Ron - Crosby’s subject will
•be “Coconuts and’ ’Coral Reefs”.-...--.
