heads turn as Mary reveals a sleeve of colourful tattoos that include the words “haus” and “wife” tat tooed beneath her knuckles. It’s this alternative look that first

got Mary noticed by staff at Ann Summers and put the 35-year-old mother-of-two through to the final

of the national store’s modelling competition: “At first I wasn’t going to bother

with’ the competition when they asked me and I just walked out of the store with no intention of do ing it,” explained Mary, “but then I suddenly had a change of heart and thought ‘why not, why shouldn’t I promote myself, my tattoos, my personality’.” So instead of shying away from

the request to parade half-naked in sexy underwear in front of mil lions of television viewers, Mary embraced the opportunity hoping it will make people question the stereotypes about women who have tattoos. “The whole ex perience has been quite liberating as it’s been a way of introducing tat tooed women to the mainstream. “I t ’s been a

great opportu-; nity to flag up the . alternative, that women and their bodies do not all. come in the same form, to’break down stereotypes and make peo ple question the judgements they make purely on - how a person looks. “I feel that I’m

she was working as an air steward ess for Virgin Atlantic. Now a work in progress, Mary,

whose creative streak and steely determination prompted her to set up her own greetings card design business four years ago with her ex-husband, uses tattoos as a way of expressing herself. At the last count, as well as the

tattoos that cover mostofherright arm, Mary also has nine others on her body and several piercings on her face. “I don’t regret any of my tat

toos as they are a record of things that have happened in my life. I find them a wonderful way to look back and reflect as well as learn frony things that have happened,” Mary explained. “I know they are not everyone’s cup of tea, but they please me and I think being true to yourself is a great lesson to learn in life.” This self-belief and confidence

are qualities that Mary hopes to pass on to her two sons, who she

_ enjoys watching football and wres tling with as well as playing on the xbox. & “My. kids love watching WWE

wrestling-and I’m an avid sup porter of Blackburn Rovers FC,” added Mary, who admitted she hates the thought of being pigeon holed. A true non-conformist, Mary

also rides a Harley-Davidson mo torbike! “A lot of the other girls in the

advert were intimidated by me at first, purely because of the way I look, and many people give me a wide berth because of my tattoos, so I’m hoping this exercise will help to show I’m just like any other real women at the end of the day.” To vote for Mary as your fa
