NOTICEBOARD Dangerous times

for health services ALL those concerned for our local health service will be distressed to hear the new £12m. development will not take place, but in the current financial climate it is hardly a total surprise.

' '

; Regardless of the physical hospital sur roundings,.Ribble Valley residents must fight to maintain our existing facilities, particularly GP supervised community beds. The Valley already has East Lanca shire’s highest proportion of elderly resi dents, predicted to rise significantly (2009: RV 18.7%; East Lancs 15.8%; England 15.2% rising by 2015 to: RV 21.5%; East Lancs 18.2%; England 17.9%). Lancashire County Council has esti

mated a 120% increase in over 65s liv ing in care compared to 82% in all East Lancashire by 2030. This is before the proposed building of 1,500 new homes in--

■ creasing our population by 6,000 plus. ■ As it is an age-related disease, there will , be a corresponding increase in dementia sufferers needing care. With fellow board members of the non-profitmaking Ab- beyfield’s Extra Care at Low Moor, we are building a new dementia care unit, but need to work closely with GPs and the hospital to make care most effective and to support carers in their vital role. On September 30th, I attended the East.

Lancashire PCT Board to hear an answer to a question submitted in advance. I asked the cost per day of an occupied bed in Ciitheroe and in Blackburn Royal Hos pital (historically low-tech community beds are substantially cheaper). Worryingly, the PCT does not yet know

the answer (although they commission and pay for both!)!! shall receive an an swer later. The PCT considered a paper of future options in a Locality Plan to be-, agreed after full consultation by April 2011. Mr Spoeriy said there will be con sultation and major decisions (e.g. selling sites) will ndt be made before handover to GP commissioners. The five options in the paper are all flawed: ' . T j Sell hospital and build a health cen

tre on the field (i.e. no beds). 2) Sell hospital and field and build

Wagon congestion

is now safety issue I AM writing in response to a letter re garding the Calderstones houses being built just off Pendle Drive, Whalley. I live in one of the terraced houses and:

I have to access the back of my house as I have a car and I use the private road at the, rear. Unfortunately, with all the buildingr- work going on and wagons coming and ' going for some reason the builders have been using the private road as a car park. This is making it difficult for residents

to get past. Also the road is alwaj's con gested with wagons and this is making it a major safety issue. Please will the council look into this. NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED

Fields for growing

not for housing I HAVE written to Ribble Valley Bor ough Council to object to its Core Strat egy.. I object to all the first stage of RVBC

Core Strategy on housing in greenfield sites in the Ribble Valley. Greenfield sites are for growing the

food we eat. Brownfield sites are for house building. Simple! Take the following items from the Co

operative News, October 12th 2010. Molly Scott-Cato, economics spokes

person for the Greens, said to the Journal of Co-operatives Studies that “the cur rent food system is insecure, causes em- ,

■ vironmental damage and could leave the ' country in a very vulnerable position.” - Robert Jones, speaking at the Co-op erative Party Conference 2010, in support of the Optimum Population Trust char ity explained that the OPT had produced a Dependency Iiidex showing how far a state is able to support itself in terms of food, water and other necessities and, on the basis of this, it had been calculated that in sustainability terms, the UK could support 15 million citizens, not the 61 million population it currently has.' OPPs

; supporters included Sir Jonathon Porritt and Sir David Attenborough. I agree with all the above and give in evidence why RVBC should refuse Co-

.operative Estates their house buildin" ‘ application.

right (Letters, October 21st). ’ As one of the offending estate agents I

course quite

have to admit it’s a fair cop. In mitigation may I say that whenever (last week’s ad excepted) I have correctly used tlie term manege, the owner of, the property has almost invariably insisted on the word be

ing altered to menage, despite my objec tions.

.

The first rule of business is that the customer is always right (even when he’s Avrong...)! •

. BILL HONEYWELL, . -A Honeywell Estate Agents Our sovereignty

no longer exists! BEFORE the last general election, I received assurance from our MP, Ninel:

Evans, that the Conservatives would not allow any further encroachment on our national sovereignty without a referen dum.

It seems to have gone by the way. I came accross a letter in my newspaper

. this week stating that David Cameron, despite promising legislation requiring a referendum if the EU proposed to taTte more powers, has quietly agreed to a sig nificant extention of European power by deciding to support tlie creation of a new EU Diplomatic Service, with the phasing out of British embassies. This Diplomatic Service has been set

up under Baroness Ashton, the new EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs. Conservative MEPs Daniel Hannam

and Roger Helmer were shocked to dis cover that there had been a change of policy at Strasbourg and that they were being whipped to vote in favour, when they had been prepared to vole against such action. . ....... When they questioned this they were

. told that it was orders from London. De spite some Conservative MEPs voting against it, the new EU Diplomatic Serslce was overwhelmingly voted into being. ’ Last week the British government an

nounced that it could not bring in a lower fuel tariff in petrol for the Hebridean is lands, as it had decided, because EU offi cials had decreed that “it is first necessary to seek permissiorifrom Brussels”. In the same newspaper it was reported

that the EU Council has refused to allow the public to access documents concern ing the highly controversial EU Equal Treatmeht Directive, which is currently being negotiated in secret between Euro pean Member States. The refusal follows a public access request by Christian Con cern for our Nation. , It seems to me that our national sover

eignty no longer exists. ■ ROBIN CLARK,

West Bradford. More powers are

being ceded to EU THE Tory promise of a referendum lock to prevent more powers being handed to Brussels without our say-so sounds fine. But hang on a minute, don’t be taken it

by their empty words. The Lisbon Treaty is self-amending and our approval is not needed for changes, regardless how they may affect our lives. Already the Coalition is merrily ceding

more powers to Europe. Since the cur rent government was elected in June a staggering total of 857 pieces legislation have been passed by the EU. There is only one way to protect this country from outside interfering legisla-

' tion and that is to withdraw from the Eu ropean Union. This now what the major ity of people in this country want, but do not hold your breath for this government to take any notice. ■
