CLITHEROE came away from third place Vale of Lune with an impressive win on Saturday. Vale crossed the whitewash

first, within five minutes of the start, although the conversion was missed.'

• The team. responded well and progressed back up the pitch, with Ed Tliornber .and Ralph Rigby pounding' the ball up the middle with able assistance from Graves and Andrew Thornbcr. Eventually the ^ pressure

told and Vale transgressed at the breakdown - Cowgill showing his usual quick think ing to take the quick tap and invite a tackle before the Vale pack had retreated'the full 10 metres, : meaning the ref- ■ eree marched the Vale team back a further 10 metres and . brought the kick well within range of Lafranceschina, who slotted the kick to bring the • score back to 5-3.

.. Vale had some good pres sure from the restart, ■ but after mauling the ball 15 yards

■ up the pilch, Clitheroe gained : possession after good work in 'the dark art of mauling from • Chamberlain and Rigby, and promptly were caught off side. Quick thinking Ben Rigby took a quick tap and

, After the break Vale came back hard at Clitheroe and the match was starting to turn a little feisty at times. : Vale got a penalty and they

-: . But what mattered was that everyone present was given an excellent game to watch. ;;,

: • It didn’t start too well for the home side, and in the first quarter they found themselves a try and a couple of penalties in arrears.

- -

They were tackling well but Clitheroe just couldn’t quite . string enough passes together

to trouble a strong Bolton side. . .Clitheroe . eventually got

their name on the scoresheet thanks to the first of a fine hat-trick of tries , from the rampaging prop Atkinson. Scrum half Wood kicked

deep into opposition tcrritoiy and enough pressure was put onto the scrambling defence to cause them to lose posses sion. Atkinson pounced on the loose ball and sprinted 10 yards and over the try line. ’ Young ;, centre.; Robinson

converted well from the side. After half-time, Clitheroe

were showing as the better side and a scrum on the Bolton 10 metre line gave an excellent attacking platform. Atkinson showed immense

power and dexterity as he crashed over with a number of defenders hanging onto him. Again Robinson slotted the extras. Only 10 minutes elapsed

before the crowd were treated to the best try of the game. Some good setup play

from Hayton, Wells, Caunce and Stott gave Atkinson the room to explode into'action. He received the ball 30 yards out and swatted a number of defenders aside to score a fine team try. A final converted try from Bolton made the score- liiie close, and the final five minutes or so were tense to say the least. A visit to Colne and Nelson ' is next up on Saturday.

Wood proves a point in Sunday Stabieford

PAUL Wood proved the point in Sunday’s Sta bieford at Clitheroe Golf Cub that it’s all about holding it together and providing a strong fin ish." ■

'■ ■ .... No score on two consecutive' holes but Paul

finished with four pars and a birdie to take the Division Two Prize with 38 points. In contrast Giles Shaw, who looked like

making the headlines again, ran out of steam with just two points on the last three holes to finish one shot of the top with 37 points. John Ashurst pipped Shaw for second place

with the same total but a better back nine. A birdie on ..the par fivelSth gave Miles

Corish the crucial one-point margin over Dave- Parkinson in Division One. Parkinson finished strongly after a blob on the short 14th but had to settle for second place with 38 points. Alan Gillespie took third after a card play-off

with the unlucky Paul Hamer. Tlie Boddie, in the shape of Peter, took home

.

the bird in Saturdays Turkey Shoot when he and partner Graeme Edmundson gobbled up the course with 45 points. Butcher Alan Hacking also provided the Turkeys for the runners-up, Craig Allison and Carl Drinkwater who finished two shots behind. Damian Durant and Peter Woods confirmed

that you need to play the par 3s well to have a good return. Tliey found two birdies and two pars on the

short holes in their 43 points for third prize. Malcolm Browns four pointer on the 15th just

gave him and partner Nigel Fitton the edge over Scott Greaves and Paul Nightingale for fourth place after cards and the same 42 points. Clitheroe members took the majority of the

spoils in the final Gents’ open Stabieford but visitors P Kilgour and P Shipton won the main prize with 42 points. Tony Bridge brought along top golfer Andrew

Samuels from Burnley to assist, and he sure did with three birdies in their 41-point total for a lucrative second prize. Wayne Townley and Gariy Byrne gelled well

for 40 points, ahead of M. Walsh and L. Owens with the same score for third! Paul Wood chipped in when required as

Andrew Walmsley laid the foundation for their 38 points and enough for the final prize. Granville Pilling showed plus one man Mark

Ashworth a trick or treat or two as they pro duced the Best Gross. Tlie Junior Medal last week found a new

name on the board when Haiden Moorscroft came home with a nett 66.
