; of the musical Annie performed at Clithe- roe’s The Grand successfully rose to the occasion. The York Street venue’s auditorium was ■
■ packed to full capacity for this sell-out perform ance by Northern Productions, whose young cast played out the much-loved story of orphan girl Annie’s journey to find her real parents. • And what a brilliant introduction to the the
atre for Ruby. As the curtains opened she sat open mouthed and spellbound, as 11-year-old . Miss Olivia Higham as Annie, belted out big
: Broadway numbers such as “Tomorrow”. . 1
For myself, such songs immediately trans
ported me back to the Eighties, and memories of the first time I watched Hollywood’s film : version of Annie. To avid theatre-goers I must sound like a real Philistine, but I have such great memories of that film. As a eight-year-old girl, who could ask for more than to watch Annie on the big screen, then go on to religiously collect the stickers for my Annie sticker book. , I wanted to share these experiences with my
daughter and Annie has been one of the first films I have bought for Ruby. So you can imag ine my delight when I heard the musical was to be performed right on our doorstep. ; ' And the look on Ruby’s face and the faces of rows of other youngsters did not disappoint.

i Haworth,'who commanded the stage,' ■ delivering a superb performance. As Clive combs the lonely hearts section for a new love interest, he is advised by his good friend Jack, played by Bob Cleeve: Bob’s performance was relaxed and his delivery was confident and flawless. As the story continues, Clive arranges dates with his three lonely hearts, An nabel, Mavis and Emily, played by Kelly Steed, Jean Pells and Jean Croft respec tively, whose performances extracted all the comedy from their character's. Unknown to Clive, his wife Anita has entered them into the local paper’s “Mr' and Mrs Perfect Marriage” competition and Clive is rudely interrupted during his last date, by cheeky, camp photographer Henry Clarke. Henry was superbly played by Damian Marsh. The characterisation was hilarious, with excellent timing. Clive then falls for lonely heart Emi ly and decides to leave his wife, shortly before his 50th birthday, against the advice of best friend. Jack. During all this, Clive and Anita’s daughter Tracey
: arrives home, having left her husband.': Tracey was played by newcomer,
Grace Mercer - well done on your de but performance. Also there, to give her opinions, throughout, is Anita’s best friend, Claire, played by Rose Dummer. Rose’s characterisation never faltered throughout the play. Her interaction with Bob Cleeve was totally believable and every line was delivered with confi dence. , .
The story progressess, with Clive
and Anita winning “Mr and Mrs Per fect Marriage” competition and a sec-
