! THIS week sees the 70th anniversary of an amaz ing chapter in the history of a local village, - the day World War i l came to Chatburn. October 30th, 1940, began

as any other day, as the resi dents of the village went about their business as usual. Every thing was about to change in a matter of minutes as witnesses observed a German bomber plane, noted to be a Heinkel

T i l , circling above them. If was so low to the ground that the pilot and controls of the plane were clearly visible. “We lived at the Post Of-,

fice at the time,” recalls Mrs Jean Stratton, who still lives in Chatburn. “Being Wednes day, it was half-day and we had closed the shop at 1 p.m. I was • waiting at the bus stop about 50 yards from ihe shop. It was very quiet and then the plane

be the scene of such momen tous and life-changing events, it is still crystal clear in the memories of the residents af- fecled. Bill Stratton, now married

to Jean, was a young man and home on leave from his post in the Territorials when the

bomber struck. “I was standing outside our

Stay away from Pendle Hill!

__ by Faiza Afzaal

HALLOWE’EN revellers are being advised not to head for Pendle Hill on the

spookiest night of the year. The hill will be closed on

Sunday (October 31st) to fair ground rides, mobile catering units and parked cars from 5 p.m. until 3 a.m. and there will also be a one-way system in place for traffic travelling from the A59 to Sabden. Pendle Hill had become a

hotspot at Hallowe’en, attract ing thousands of visitors from across Lancashire. The Event Safely Advisory

Group implemented a plan to control access to Pcndle Hill following concerns expressed about the growth of the event, heavy traffic, alcohol-related disorder and the use of fire works. Agencies have agreed the hill is not suitable_for these types of activities involving

Previous policing operations have been extremely success ful with significant reductions in incidents of both anti-social behaviour and criminal dam age.” Motorists will be able to

drive from the A59 over Pen dle Hill to Sabden, where they may park in the village and walk up the hill. Pendle Hill will be closed

Neighbourhood Policing Insp. Dcbby C arter said; “Hallowe’en is renowned for the trick or treat tradition and whilst we don’t want to ruin anyone’s fun, we want every one to be safe and feel safe. “From speaking to members

of our local communities, we know that some of our more vulnerable and elderly mem bers of the community feel a little apprehensive at this time of year so as we approach the Hallowe’en and Bonfire pe riod, increased highly visible police patrols will be on duty to deal with any incidents of anti social behaviour.. “We will also be making

: posters available to those who would rather not have a visit from trick or treaters and we would ask revellers to politely abide by them.” , ■
