17 MP visits local firm by Faiza Afzaal :: A THRI'VING local company was
honoured by a visit from their local MP. Ribble Valley, MP Nigel Evans, who
is also Deputy Speaker of the House : of Commons, took time out of his busy schedule and visited Spirofiow as part of
his mission to discuss the concerns and ■ needsofindustry. • V
> Ciitheroe firm Spirofiow has already demonstrated that, even, during tough times, opportunities have to be grasped. Since the beginning of the year, Spirofiow has participated in a major exhibition in Dubai, UAE and, as direct result, the company has established a representative there, who is beginning to win business. . It has formed a joint-venture with a US
manufacturer of specialised pneumatic conveying systems to introduce the ben efits of the firm’s equipment to customers across Europe. Group chairman, Mr Michel Podevyn
said: “The joint venture and the acquisi- ■ tion gives us one of the widest ranges of powder handling conveyors in the busi ness. “Customers can be assured that we
■ can offer them the optimum solutions for their applications.
“This, coupled with the introduction of
. some new bulk bag handling equipment and the widening of our marketing activi ties into the Middle East, will ensure we ■ come through this recession and are ready to grasp the business that’ll be there when the recovery comes. “We were delighted to have Mr Evans
visit us so that we could talk candidly about the issues that affect a small busi-

Damp and misty walk at Arnside
A FIRM favourite with the Ciitheroe Ramblers is the area around Arnside,
just across lancashire’s border with Cumbria. Nineteen ramblers, led
by Jane Donnelly, set out from Milnthorpe on a varied walk which includ ed a little of everything, that the area has to offer - parkland, woodland, limestone crag, estuary and historical interest. • Jane writes: “Our route
went through Dallam Park beside the River Bel la where we saw a heron. The parkland is beautiful with magnificent trees and a herd of fallow deer. The route climbed up through the park and then through. fields to the Heron Corn Mill. Corn has been ground on this site since ■ 1220 and it is now a work ing museum.
“After a refreshment
stop we followed a nar row green lane and went through a field to'enter the woods. Woodland paths led us to Fairy Steps, a highly polished cleft in the limestone cliff. Unfor tunately the weather had deteriorated and the driz-
, zle made the limestone slippery. Great care was needed on the limestone path to Hazelslack, which is a peel tower built as a safe haven from maraud ing Scots. “Field paths and tracks
brought us to the Arnside Silverdale Road from which we took the path to Redhills and then flimbed up Arnside Knott to pass the knotted tree and ar-
■ rive at the view finder. ■ The weather was wet and misty and the view non existent. We went down
towards Arnside passing [he convalescent home to take a narrow path to the shore and then along the front. “The railway line was
crossed by the footbridge at the station. The dis used railway line was fol lowed all the way back to the start. The first part is a well built embankment next to the shore which gives fine views of the es tuary. This is followed by a stretch through a cutting with old bridges above and then past lime kilns to finish on the shore beside the Bella. “The weather improved
towards the end, but we missed out on the won derful panorama of Lake land Fells from Arnside Knott.”
