; risy from senior figures in the Labour • Party bears some comment. Recently, in response to the news that Alan Milburri
,, had agreed to advise the current coalition : government on social mobility, that Lord
; John Prescott (you know, the same John Prescott who said he would never sit in
: the House of Lords) called Mr Milburn a collaborator.
' ■ - ■ ■ : He was quickly joined by former Health
Secretary and Labour leadership con tender Andy Biimham, who also criticised Mr Milburn for helping the coalition. Let me remind readers that both these two individuals were members of Gordon
, Brown’s government, which less than' three years ago invited people from other
■ - political parties and none to join a “gov ernment of all the talents”. How come it is okay for a Labour government to involve people from other parties, yet seemingly - : a heinous crime for a member of the La-
■ hour Party to assist a government of an other colour?-
■ ■ This, I am afraid, is typical of the most : tribal of all political parties in this coun-
■ try. Countless examples exist of Labour . hypocrisy. I will give you just one more. ■ The Labour shadow cabinet has taken . a decision to oppose the Bill to allow the holding of a referendum on a change in the voting system from first past the post to the Alternative Vote, yet this was a La bour manifesto commitment. Why have
; they decided to oppose the Bill? Sheer political opportunism. Tliis is nothing new from Labour. Nine

• Vote referendum I felt I had to write, as they appear a little confused. The AV system uses the exact same
constituencies as the “first past the post” system and produces a constituency MP in the same way. What Coun. Hind may be thinking of is Proportional Representation, which is
, something different but is what we should be having the referendum on, as it would actually produce a parliament that re- fiecls the people’s wishes. ■ Coun. Hind says that with AV we can
have a situation of “constituencies elect ing everyone’s second choice”, but with the current system it is possible to elect the majority’s third or fourth choice, not exactly an ideal solution! Finally, without wishing to point out the
“bleedin’ obvious”, we have a coalition government right now which does not ap pear weak and is getting on with the job of governing the country in an extremely strong manner. Perhaps Coun. Hind thinks a system
where 36% of the vote makes you the winner is the best way to elect a govern ment, but it seems very strange to me! COUN DAVE BERRYMAN, Liberal-Democrat
teen years ago when I sat on the Liberal Selfish statements
IT’S a pity that the Conservative spokes-. men for the Ribble Valley, Couns. Atkin son and Hind, did not do the right thing and ask the voters of the Ribble Valley, ■
, what they wanted before issuing such triv ial statements on what they wanted in the way people voted in this country. They have stated that they were op
posed to anything that would change the way people vote, or not vote, when • it comes to the proposed referendum on electoral reform, stating that any reform would upset the present system. Is that
not what reform is all about - changine it for the best?
. ^
The present system does not show what the voters really want, with more people

twww.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk Stop lead thefts!
MAY I through the letters column ask all to watch out for your neighbours. The details are not being reported, but
“gangs” of thieves are stealing lead fi’ash-' ings from porches and roofs - they don’t
. even need a ladder to remove lead from your porch. ; - . ^
• In some cases they climb onto church
roofs at no thought for their own safety and that of anyone who may be passing by. In one area that I know of they acted
: in broad daylight wearing high visibility jackets; a near neighbour did see them “at work”. They had stripped all the lead flashing from the roofs by the time they had gone and he went out to take a look. The church that had its lead stripped
is surrounded by residential properties. That was done in darkness, but many are daytime robberies. They appeared
to be genuine workmen carrying out roof work. They are also going into backyards and
helping themselves to anything that can earn a few pounds. Have a lock fitted to back gates and if you genuinely cannot af ford one contact charitable organisations to ask for their help. May I suggest that if you see “work
men”, you go out and maybe ask for their “card” or just phone the police if you think they don’t look “just right”. Watch how they put up the ladder; do thev do it with confidence or do they look like they are not too confident? The police would rather attend than thieves get away. An honest workman will be only too happy to give you any information you ask for. I am not suggesting anyone puts them
selves in harm’s way, but we need to get back to the days when we all watched over each other.
Also, can I suggest that if anyone
knocks on the door of an elderly resident and tells you that your roof or gutters need work, that you thank them for their concern and tell them you have a relative who will fix it for you - and that goes for any work that is suggested by a doorstep tradesman.
'. Then ask a friend
or.relative for help in getting the work done by a reputable local tradesman. Then there is account ability and hopefully some guarantee on the work carried out. Where I live we make each other aware
when we go away so we all watch each others’ property. I actually know one of my neighbours challenged someone who he felt looked suspicious who called while we were out. As it turned out the caller actually com plimented on how good it was that he was
challenged. He was genuine. Together we can make it a “no go” area
for a trend that is on the increase - lead and metal theft. ■ ' ;

would be adequate. Then the staff could be employed elsewhere, preferably col lecting litter from the streets of the town. If this problem is an I.T. problem, then
this could be rectified within 24 hours at the most, as in any’other reputable or ganisation.
