CLITHEROE RUFC kicked off the season with a fixture which is rapidly becoming a favourite. opener when they entertained Gamforth afLit- tlemoor. , In what was a squad game, the match was organised into

, quarters,. and ■ both teams started brightly on a perfect pitch, expertly prepared by Phil Isherwood. Opening excliangcs were ■

eyeh and it was a typically scrappy first 15 minutes. However, both teams were

looking to run the ball, and the touchline crowd were well entertained. Eventually Ben Graves popped up 10 metres out from the Carnforth try line, and with a neat sideslip he roared in to score the open ing try of the season for the Maroon and Gold. ,The score remained . at 7-

0 until the end-of the first quarter, although there were opportunities on both sides. ■ Clitheroe' had' the upper hand again in the second quar-.

■ ter and a mazy run from James Dickinson saw him touchdown

. under the posts after some more great interplay between forwards and backs. Camforth were not to be

■outdone, and had some rare rattles up the pitch, but could not quite make the final pass go to hand as the Littlemoor defence held-firm. . Tlie ■ third quarter started

with ■ Carnforth getting into : the match' and beginning to look the stronger, as they attacked the Clitheroe line

helping out'should con tact Paul Bretherton' on 01200441806.

LANCASHIRE Amateur Cup holders Hurst Green got . their season underway.with a resounding win over local ri-• vals Langho at Smithy Row. ■ The home side gave.league- ,

debuts to Simon Lakeland and , Nick Fielding, and the debu tants played a hugely signifi- • cant part in the win against a side who will be there or there abouts again this season. ■ '.The home side ■ took an

early lead on 15 minutes from ; a Chris Leighton penalty as Lakeland was pulled back in ' the area en route to goal. ;i : ■ The away side, as always, played - some . neat,- attrac-: -

live football and following a . cross that wasn’t properly cleared, the away side , equal ised in spectacular fashion as Sharpies found the.net with an overhead kick.

The home side struggled to

find any proper rythym, but did go close, on a . couple of occasions through Leighton. ■'; Chippendale was also lively

as the lone front man, and he; also went close with a near -

post header following a right

- wing Lakeland cross. . Langho,. despite dominat

ing possession, struggled for an end product - but man-

■ aged to ’worry the home side somewhat.

:.Goals change games, and : ■

Green’s .second-just before half-time : did . just that, ' Anderton-heading in at the back post following a Fielding flick-on from a corner.; r ■The" next goal; in the game

would. prove; equally as piv otal, a s a Langho equaliser would .have no doubt given

■ them the appetite to go on and win the game.

But the goal went to the

home side as a long Young goal kick found Chippendale, who: found ■ Malley running into the box, and he finished well under pressure. Langho may have felt'

harshly done by as they con tinued to play football o n - the floor, while Green were a little more efficient in posses sion, capitalising on a Langho defence that had many gaps. ; _ With" a two-goal lead, ■ Green could afford to sit back and battle,, rather than push for more goals. ■

'

, . Langho pressed for a way' back into the game but with

Simpson being superbly mar shalled by Anderton and Walker, they struggled to find the football they played in the first half and their challenge faded.

Malley should have made it

. four as he somehow managed to fire over from inside the six-yard box after a pinpoint Lakeland cross, but the fourth did arrive minutes from time as a neat move down the left hand side found Fielding on. tli6 edge of the box, and his finish into the corner was a perfect way to round off the ■ afternoon.

Hunt and Fish catch top spot!

FISHING and hunting as competitive sports always go well together, so it was appropriate that in the weekend fourball at Clitheroe Golf Club, Fish and

Hunt teamed up to catch top spot with 42 points. • Andrew Fish and Kieron Hunt shared the work load but Fish’s birdie on the tricky par three 17th put the seal on a profitable day. After a mediocre start, Garry Speak and Malcolm

Brown found birdies at the 8th and 9th to set them up for a solid back nine and 41 points. Dave Chippendale and Simon Swindells settled for

third place after cards with the same 41 total. Alex Cave did most of the spadework in their part

nership but Barry Thomas came good with birdies on the 16th and 18th to secure them fourth after cards. John Whowell steered Derek McIntyre into the final prize spot with the same 40 points According to the hymn sheet, the going was tough

for Sunday’s Single Stableford, but Julian Troup kept his composure on the run in to score 37 points and claim first prize. Mike Fearnhead was just one shot away with 36

points after a good back nine to finish second. Craig Allison was way off the pace until a back-to-

back birdie finish elevated him onto the ieaderboard in third place. - Miles Corish is having a fabulous run of late and

he again was the star turn in the Midweek Medal. 78-11-67 was the impressive return that won him the Division One Prize.. Peter Pedder reaped the reward for his dedication

to the game when his nett 69, including two birdies, put him in second place. , . Division Two found three members with nett 71s,

but Swarmi Narayana feil off the prize perch after cards. Philip Walker and Ken Mantle both came back in

44 gross but with handicap advantage. Walker took first prize. You win nothing in the Junior competitions with

average returns, and Chris Parkinson was all smiles when his 43 points put him top of the Juniors in their Single Stableford. Sophie Lamb and Tom Forrest both finished with

41 points. Lamb took second prize whiist Forrest set tled for the best gross.

The Division Two Ladies’ Midweek Medal was

won by Emma Clegg (76-2-74) by sb: shots: from Sheila Cornwell (94-14-80), with Kath Townley (103- 13-90) third. In Division Two, Janet Bailey took the honours

(99-23-76), ahead of Barbara Crowther (107-29-78) and Kath Bithell (113-24-89). Still at Clitheroe, the President’s Prize was won by

Carole Brown with 38 points from Emma Clegg (37 points, after card play-off). Chris Stokes’ 78 was the best gross. • ON Thursday, the ladies at Whalley competed

for the Celia Porter Memorial Trophy. Winning with 35 points was Shirley Palich, with

Carol Blackadder in second place with 33 points. Taking third spot after a card play-off was Ann

Pollard with 33 points. The Junior competition, played over 36 holes,

was won by Scott Byroni with scores of 76-5-71 and 74-5-69. Runner-up was Tom Tuley with scores of 76-2-74

and 71-2-69. • MEMBERS of Stonyhurst Park Golf Club turned

out in force at the weekend to honour the memory of Les Hoole, who sadly passed away last year. His family have donated a beautiful shield, which

wiil be presented annually, and ensured a keenly fought contest. The format for the competition was full handicap

strokeplay. Tlie result was very close with the runner up, Steve Bufton, narrowly missing out after a card play off with 87-17-70. The winner on 88-18-70, but with a better back nine, was Richard Moody. ’ :
