What qualifications do you need? The basic ones you need are National Proficiency Test Certificates in i chamsav/ maintenance; smail tree . . failing; tree climbing and aerial rescue; ■ chainsaw from a rope and harness and dismantling. Each is a week iong and there’s an assessment after each.

Alex McKelvie, 23, South Ribble Council and practise until it comes naturally. ; •

. What sort of starting salary and : package can you expect? ■You would generally start as a ■. ■ groundsman on around £15,000. As a foreman,'around £20,000. ■

What sort of personal skills make -

Any other requirements for example health and fitness or age? You have to be fairly fit and healthy and • have common sense as you're handling a chainsaw all day. The main basic ' ■ requirement is that you can lift your own body weight as you have to be able to climb a tree using a rope and harness. There's no age limitthough - my colleague is 50 and is a brilliant climber. ■

How long does it take to qualify? . . For me it took around a year. It’s advised that after each assessment you go away

. someone best suited to a career? ; : One of the main elements of the job is

. cutting back trees that are overhanging people’s gardens so you have to be able to speak to them and assess their.

, needs. You must be good at working in : a team, and when you’re working with a chainsaw you need to be focused.

What sort of career prospects and structure is there? The natural structure is to start as a

-groundsman, then progress to a climber, thentoaforeman. Afterthatyoucan •

■ do a formal qualification to become an ■arboricultural technician or officer. Most - jobs are for local authorities.'

• What kind of job satisfaction can you :

: expect from a career? On fine days I’m really thankful to be working outside, but when it’s pouring down it’s not so great. This is quite a

■high-risk job as you’re climbing very tall trees using just a rope, and handling

- chainsaws. When you’ve working on a difficult take-down of a tree leaning .. over a house and everything goes right, that’s the satisfying part.-

In 50 words sell your profession?

. If you want an active, outdoor job and are not afraid of a little hard work then ~-

; tree surgery could be for you. I could be dismantling a 90-year-old beech tree one day then planting new trees the next. It’s a wide-ranging and satisfying job. ■ ■
