WHALEY teenager Megan Ather ton is a step closer to winning a top modelling contract after being select ed from hundreds of hopefuls as a re gional finalist in the Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2010 competition. • As the Glitlieroe Advertiser went to
press yesterday, the 16-year-old stu dent was due to join nine other specs- wcaring fashionistas from across the North West at the regional final at Speesavers in Liverpool. Megan said:_“I wear glasses for

WHEN people decide to retire they often look forward to qui-
. et days pottering in the garden or sitting by the fire in their slippers - but not so for Re
tired solicitor John Eatough. Getting on his bike is John’s
idea of relaxation. -John (63), of Grindleton, has
been busy training since his retire ment last year for an epic journey from Land’s End to John O’Croats to raise money for a charity close to his heart, the Rosemere Cancer . Foundation.
• . His mother died from cancer when only in her mid-30s. - People say that Land’s End to
John o’Groats is uphill, but-the majority of cyclists who attempt the ride seem to do it that way round to take advantage of the prevailing winds coming in from the south-west. The run through Cornwall and Devon is said to be particularly challenging though. Said John: “At my age I am not
going to be trying to break any records and its difficult to say how long the ride will take, particularly ■ bearing in mind that I have never tried this sort of thing before, but if I’m not back by Christmas could someone please send the search parties out?” He decided not to take a tent,
but stay in bed and breakfast and hostels and he is looking forward to meeting friends along the way who will cycle with him for a while.
. Although John did cycle when
he was younger, work and fam- • ily commitments took over, so it was not until he retired last Sep tember from Napthens Solicitors, m Blackburn and Preston that he took up cycling again. John IS married to Diane and
they have three grown-up chil dren, Hannah, Lucy and Robert. Diane will be driving John to Land’s End to wave him off. on September 5th. His months of training have
been in the hills and fells of the Ribble Valley, up to Malham, -
